Fire Protection Designer

Join us and design your place with Stantec.Your OpportunityStantec is looking for an intermediate Fire Protection Designer in one of our Atlantic offices. . This role will be focused on the delivery of various fire protection projects, including design of sprinkler, special suppression, and fire alarm systems; Fire Code analyses, Fire Hazard Assessments, and system testing/commissioning. The successful candidate will work in a team environment, working closely with both junior and senior staff to deliver projects, and will have the opportunity to deal directly with clients for proposals and delivery of projects. In this role you will be responsible for the design and execution of projects ranging in size and complexity, with exposure to transit, mission critical facilities (data centers), industrial, healthcare, civic, commercial and educational projects. The position will involve the application fire and life safety principles to fire protection systems design projects as well as the assessment of existing fire protection systems. The position requires the ability to assess conditions of existing systems, analyze performance and Code conformance, prepare written reports with cost estimates, complete design calculations for fire protection systems, complete drawings and specifications, undertake site review and verification of systems, and advise clients on recommended fire protection system features. In addition to fire protection design, the position may also involve the application of provincial and national building and fire codes, standards, and best practice guidelines related to the storage, use and handling of hazardous materials.Your Key ResponsibilitiesDesign fire protection systems including suppression and detection and other related systems.Assess fire and life safety performance of new and existing building fire protection systems using applicable Codes and Standards.Prepare technical reports.Oversee the drafting of fire protection systems and details using AutoCAD or, alternatively, markup design concepts using Bluebeam Revu.Ability to model fire protection systems using AutoDesk REVIT and working with RVT.Complete design calculations including using hydraulic calculation software such as HydraCAD, AutoSprink and RVT.Participate in design reviews, shop drawings reviews, construction site visits and verifications for various fire protection systems.Conduct site audits of fire protection systems performance, as-built conditions, and Code conformance.Review contract documents, including drawings and specifications for Code conformance.Participate on project teams including other fire protection personnel, contractors and other technical disciplines for successful project delivery.Investigate, advise, and solve unusual design problems.Conduct site visits to gather data on existing conditions and review construction.Prepare reports and other technical communication.Work with project teams including other staff, other technical disciplines and contractors for successful project delivery; andAssist in the preparation of project proposals and liaise with clients.Your Capabilities and CredentialsSelf-motivated, problem-solving and solution-oriented, high level of accountabilityOrganizational skills with the ability to effectively prioritize tasks on multiple projectsAbility to work in a team environmentStrong customer service commitmentExcellent communication and written skills in EnglishProfessional attitude with a strong commitment to succeedAbility to develop clients and grow consulting business opportunitiesAbility to communicate technical concepts clearly and persuasivelyDemonstrated ability to manage projects and communicate with clients, authorities and contractors Education & ExperienceDegree in Engineering (fire safety/protection preferred, however, mechanical, or electrical also acceptable).Alternative to Engineering Degree, Diploma in fire protection engineering technology; may also consider Diploma in mechanical or electrical engineering technology.Minimum 4 years of relevant experience, consulting experience preferred; however, design experience in a contractor environment may be considered.Experience in fire protection system design, fire alarm system design, or related systems design preferred.Although not mandatory, knowledge in the fundamental principles of fire dynamics, behavior of materials in fire, and human behavior in fire is desired. Please note, the final agreed upon compensation is based on individual education, qualifications, experience, and work location. At Stantec certain roles are bonus eligible.
