Workers' Compensation Claims Adjuster

We are looking for a highly capable Workers' Compensation Claims Adjuster to join our Claims team and work from either our Rockwood, PA or Omaha, NE offices. Alternatively, we can also fill this role in our offices in Richmond, VA or Springfield, MO. We are open to a less qualified candidate (Trainee or Associate Adjuster) with training to bring the skill set up to an Adjuster level in the next couple of years. The position reports to a manager based in Texas and focuses on adjudicating workers' compensation indemnity and medical-only claims for our largest mining account, underwritten by Rockwood Casualty, mostly in IL, IN, KY, NY, PA, and VA. Approximately 20% of claims are covered by the federal black lung program. Our Adjusters contribute to providing superb results for our clients. Location: In-Office. Candidates must be able to work on site during standard business hours. Essential Responsibilities Adjudicate indemnity and federal black lung workers' compensation claims of higher technical complexity with a direct impact on departmental results. Adjudicate medical-only claims reported by the account. Provide laser-focused customer service to our clients by delivering superior claims outcomes and building long lasting connections with our insured and brokers. Resolve generalized issues requiring understanding of a broader set of issues. Report to claims management, loss control, and underwriters on claims trends and developments. Identify loss drivers and claim trends to reduce frequency and severity through data analysis and improved claim management. Investigate claims promptly and thoroughly, including interviewing all involved parties. Manage claims in litigation. Maintain a timely and complete diary to ensure cases move toward optimal financial outcome and resolution. Create and review reserves in line with market and Argo's reserving policy. Identify, assign, and coordinate expertise resources to assist in case resolution. Prepare reports for file documentation. Apply creative solutions to achieve best financial outcomes. Solve straightforward claims within authority limits and follow referral procedures. Negotiate cost‑effective solutions for the company and customers within limits using various negotiation styles. Process mail and prioritize workload. Complete telephone calls and written correspondence to/from various parties. Show appreciation and passion for strong claim management. Qualifications / Experience Required Practical knowledge of workers' compensation claims with a strong customer service focus. Bachelor’s degree from an accredited university required; trainees can substitute four years of general work experience. Two or more insurance designations or four additional years of related experience may substitute a degree for associate or adjuster candidates. Minimum of two years’ experience adjudicating indemnity workers' compensation claims for adjuster-level candidates. One year for associate-level candidates. No work experience required for trainee level unless substituting general work experience for a degree. Working knowledge of IL, IN, KY, NY, PA, and VA jurisdictions not required but considered a plus. Must be licensed in KY and NY or have the ability to obtain such licenses within 90 days of hire. Good business acumen and understanding of insurance company operations. Ability to exercise discretion and independent judgment for significant matters. Strong focus on execution and consistent delivery of results. Solution-focused, flexible, and resourceful in a fast‑paced evolving environment. Effective time management and prioritization skills. Excellent evaluation, strategic, persuasive negotiation, and conflict resolution skills. Proficient in MS Office Suite and other business software. Strong listening and questioning techniques. Polished written and verbal communication; fluency in English. Desire for continued professional development via continuing education and self-development.
