Engineering Aide

The Engineering Aide provides technical and administrative support to the City\'s Engineering and Public Works Department. This position assists with infrastructure projects, development review, inspections, record keeping, and field data collection to support the planning, design, construction, and maintenance of municipal systems including streets, drainage, water, and wastewater. Responsibilities Under the general supervision of the Planning Supervisor, assists with review of projects, GIS mapping, customer service, inspections, and ensuring compliance with the City’s Unified Development Code; assists with the review of construction plans, plats, and development submittals for completeness and compliance with City standards. Supports engineering staff with project documentation, cost estimates, and report preparation. Conducts field inspections of public infrastructure projects (streets, drainage, utilities) to verify compliance with plans and specifications. Collects and records field data including measurements, photos, and site observations. Maintains records, maps, permits, and engineering files (both digital and hard copy). Coordinates with contractors, developers, and other City departments regarding project status and requirements. Responds to citizen inquiries and service requests related to infrastructure concerns. Assists with GIS mapping updates and data entry, as applicable. Monitors ongoing construction activities and reports progress or issues to supervising engineers. Ensures compliance with safety standards and applicable regulations. Knowledge, Skills and Abilities Proficiency in Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, Outlook). Familiarity with AutoCAD, GIS, or similar software is a plus. Strong organizational and record-keeping skills. Ability to communicate effectively with staff, contractors, and the public. Ability to work both independently and as part of a team. Attention to detail and ability to manage multiple tasks. Basic math and problem-solving skills. Qualifications High school diploma or GED required. Associate degree or coursework in engineering, construction management, or a related field preferred. Basic knowledge of civil engineering principles, construction practices, or public infrastructure systems. Ability to read and interpret engineering plans, maps, and specifications (preferred but can be trained). Valid Texas Driver’s License with a good driving record. Working Conditions PHYSICAL DEMANDS: Ability to stand, walk, and traverse construction sites for extended periods; may require lifting up to 25–50 pounds occasionally. ENVIRONMENTAL CONDITIONS: Considerable time in the office, some time in the field inspecting sites with exposure to weather and varying lighting conditions. SENSORY DEMANDS: Regular office conditions with limited outdoor exposure to weather and varied lighting on locations both indoors and out. Salary and Benefits Salary commensurate with experience.
