Job Summary
Xavier University of Louisiana is accepting applications for the position of University Police Lieutenant. The University Police Lieutenant supervises, plans, coordinates and oversees the activities and operations of staff assigned to the patrol shift, investigations and administration. The University Police Lieutenant serves as the responsible official in charge in the absence of the Associate Director/Deputy Chief of Police; and completes additional duties as assigned. AA/EOE Minimum Qualifications
Associates degree required. Several years of experience in law enforcement, preferably in a University setting. Preferred Qualifications
Bachelor's degree preferred. Special Requirements Summary
Should be proficient in using multiple computer software programs designed to prepare reports and other documents relative to the position (i.e. Microsoft Word, Excel, PowerPoint etc.). Must meet Louisiana Peace Officer Standards and Training (POST) requirements for a Special Police Commission and have exemplary background and integrity as well as a history of ethical decision making. Must be in possession of a valid state motor vehicle driver's license; must have and maintain a clean motor vehicle driving record. Must pass a comprehensive criminal background investigation. Knowledge of criminal laws, case laws, legal codes, court procedures, precedents, government regulations, juvenile procedures, effective policing practices and due process. Excellent organizational, interpersonal, written and verbal communication skills. Candidates must be able to demonstrate their ability to understand verbal and written direction, maintain a professional demeanor and restraint at all times, which includes stressful situations. Experience in managing a diverse work force highly desirable. Knowledge and Understanding of public safety and security issues. Strong analytical, critical thinking and decision-making skills. Strong interpersonal and communications skills are necessary to effectively deal with the University students, faculty, staff and the public. Must be able to work independently in absence of the Assistant Vice President and Associate Director of Campus Safety. Must be able to properly and professionally analyze and react to stressful and hostile situations. Must have knowledge of the requirements of the Clery Act., Title IX, and Threat Assessment. Supervises, evaluates, trains and provides guidance to subordinate personnel; directs and advises subordinates in enforcing criminal laws and university policies and procedures; ensures subordinate compliance with the Police Department policies, procedures, and regulations; oversees all schedules for regular and special assignments for the patrol shift; oversees special assignments and details as required; responds to calls for service as appropriate; documents complete, concise and clear information in reports; communicates and maintains good relations with the faculty, staff, students, general public, and other law enforcement agencies; collaborates with the Associate Director of Public Safety/Deputy Chief of Police on all training activities for the patrol shift; must be trained and certified to carry and operate any weapons or devices when appropriate (i.e. less-lethal weapons, OC Spray, ASP baton, handcuffs etc.); must be able to command and mitigate threatening incidents or events on property owned by the university; prepare necessary records and reports for submission to the Assistant Vice President of Campus Safety and the Associate Director of Campus Safety; performs other assignments as assigned.
