Job Title: Building Maintenance Mechanic

Job Description

The Building Maintenance Mechanic performs inspections, preventive maintenance, and repair work on building systems and components in a large commercial and hospital facility. Working under general supervision, this role applies electrical, carpentry, mechanical, plumbing, and HVAC skills to ensure safe, reliable, and efficient operation of building infrastructure. The mechanic uses a wide range of tools and techniques, follows established safety procedures, and completes work in accordance with trade, industry, and engineered standards.

Shift :

Two primary shifts are available: a weekend-focused schedule of Saturday and Sunday from 7:00 a.m. to 11:30 p.m. plus one additional flexible 8-hour shift during the week, and an evening weekday schedule of Monday through Friday from 3:00 p.m. to 11:30 p.m.

Responsibilities

• Inspect, maintain, and repair building systems and components, including electrical, mechanical, plumbing, HVAC, and general facility systems.
• Perform preventive maintenance on equipment and systems to reduce downtime and extend service life.
• Troubleshoot issues in commercial building systems and diagnose the root cause of equipment and system failures.
• Use basic electrical, carpentry, mechanical, and plumbing techniques and procedures to complete maintenance and repair tasks.
• Apply knowledge of building elements and codes to ensure all work complies with relevant standards and regulations.
• Follow and apply safety rules, procedures, and practices, including proper use of safety equipment as defined by OSHA and industry standards.
• Identify and avoid hazards by recognizing warning labels, signage, lights, and other warning devices.
• Safely operate tools, equipment, and lifts required for facility maintenance and repair work.
• Work efficiently and complete assignments within reasonable timeframes, as measured against trade, industry, or engineered standards.
• Communicate effectively in written and verbal English with maintenance, facility, and departmental staff to coordinate work and report issues.
• Perform maintenance and repair activities in shops, mechanical rooms, and other facility spaces, including confined areas and elevated locations up to 30 feet.
• Support painting, general building maintenance, and other facility upkeep tasks as needed.
• Load, unload, transport, and position tools, equipment, and materials, including pushing or pulling loaded hand trucks weighing up to 75 pounds.

Essential Skills

• At least 5 years of experience in building maintenance, preferably in commercial or large facility environments.
• Knowledge of basic electrical, carpentry, mechanical, and plumbing techniques, procedures, and building elements.
• Knowledge of HVAC systems and general building maintenance practices.
• Understanding of safety rules, procedures, and practices, including OSHA and industry safety standards.
• Ability to safely use hand tools, power tools, and facility maintenance equipment.
• Ability to troubleshoot and repair building systems and equipment, including electrical, plumbing, HVAC, and general facility systems.
• Proficient written and verbal English communication skills at a high school graduate level to interact with staff and document work.
• Ability to identify and avoid hazards by interpreting warning labels, signage, lights, and other warning devices.
• Ability to stand, walk, or sit for extended periods of time while performing maintenance activities.
• Ability to work in confined spaces, awkward positions, and at heights up to 30 feet using ladders, lifts, and equipment.
• Ability to load, unload, and transport tools, equipment, and materials and to push or pull loaded hand trucks weighing up to 75 pounds.

Additional Skills & Qualifications

• Training in multiple trades programs at a vocational or technical school, college, or apprenticeship sponsor organization.
• High school diploma or equivalent.
• Experience working in commercial building environments, including hospitals or large facilities.
• Experience with preventive maintenance programs for HVAC, electrical, plumbing, and general building systems.
• Familiarity with CFC/EPA-related practices for HVAC systems.
• Experience with painting and general facility upkeep.
• Comfort working in shop and mechanical area environments with exposure to dust, heat, cold, noise, and fumes.
• Ability to adapt to flexible scheduling, including weekend and evening shifts.

Work Environment

This role operates primarily in a hospital shop and large facility environment, providing extensive exposure to mechanical rooms, commercial building systems, and a wide variety of maintenance conditions. You will work in shops and mechanical areas with exposure to dust, heat, cold, noise, and fumes, and may also perform work outdoors in extreme temperatures and varying weather conditions. The position requires frequent movement throughout a large campus, resulting in a high level of daily walking and physical activity. You will work in confined spaces, awkward positions, and at heights up to 30 feet using ladders, lifts, and related equipment. The role involves standing, walking, or sitting for extended periods and handling tools, equipment, and materials, including pushing or pulling loaded hand trucks up to 75 pounds.

Job Type & Location

This is a Contract to Hire position based out of Baltimore, MD.

The pay range for this position is $26.00 - $30.00/hr.
