A Day in the Life of the Urgent Care Veterinarian
You'll be the go-to clinical mind for pets coming in with everything from wounds and GI upset to toxicities and trauma, diagnosing, treating, and sometimes performing soft-tissue or emergency surgery, all while keeping owners informed and involved every step of the way. You'll work hand-in-hand with a skilled technician and support team to move quickly without ever losing the compassionate touch that sets this clinic apart. It's fast-paced, hands-on medicine with real clinical autonomy, and every case you handle helps a family get their pet back to feeling better.

Responsibilities include:

• Examining, diagnosing, and treating dogs and cats with urgent medical conditions
• Managing a wide range of cases: GI illness, respiratory distress, urinary emergencies, wounds, bite wounds, toxicities, foreign bodies, dermatologic and ophthalmic conditions, musculoskeletal injuries, acute infections, and trauma
• Performing urgent-care procedures such as wound management, bandaging/splinting, and urinary catheter placement
• Performing soft-tissue and emergency surgeries (GI foreign body, pyometra, cystotomy, splenectomy, GDV, etc.)
• Overseeing sedation and anesthesia as appropriate
• Interpreting diagnostic imaging and lab work
• Stabilizing patients for transfer to 24-hour emergency or specialty care when needed
• Communicating diagnoses, treatment options, and cost considerations clearly and compassionately with pet owners
• Building thorough medical records and treatment plans, including for referring vets and specialists
• Offering alternative treatment plans when cost is a barrier, always prioritizing patient comfort
• Mentoring and supporting veterinary technicians and support staff
• Following hospital protocols, controlled-substance regulations, and all applicable veterinary laws

Requirements and Qualifications:

• DVM or equivalent degree from an accredited veterinary school
• Active Texas veterinary license (or eligibility for licensure)
• Current DEA license or eligibility to obtain one, if required
• 3+ years of clinical veterinary experience; urgent care, emergency, or high-volume general practice experience strongly preferred
• Strong diagnostic and clinical decision-making skills
• Comfortable managing multiple patients in a fast-paced setting
• Excellent communication and client-service skills
• Able to work independently and as part of a team
• Confident, compassionate, and professional bedside manner
