An all-service VA Medical Center in an all-season recreational getaway! Cardiologist needed in Augusta, Maine. Must-haves; unrestricted state medical license, qualified to diagnose, treat, and manage patients according to standard, usual, and acceptable methods and techniques. VA Maine Healthcare System (formerly Togus VA Medical Center) proudly serves Maine's veterans at a main campus in Augusta or any of nine outpatient clinics. It's a modern 67 bed facility with general medical, surgical, intermediate and mental health beds, as well as 40 Skilled-Longer Stay beds, a 25-bed Dementia Unit, and a hospice unit. The oldest veterans' facility in the country (est. 1866), much of its 500+ acres is natural woodland habitat for wildlife. Salary to be determined by local Physician/Dentist Compensation Panel (commensurate with education, experience and qualifications). Duties include:

• Provides cardiology care for inpatients and outpatients at VA Maine Health Care System.
• Performs outpatient examinations
• Performs Compensation and Pension exams and/or reviews
• Provides consultation service related to cardiology to the medical staff
• Admits and manages inpatients
• Interprets echocardiograms (including stress echos, dobutamine echos and transesophageal echocardiograms)
• Interprets holter monitor studies
• Interprets event recorder studies
• Interprets electrocardiograms (EKGs)
• Performs Nuclear Cardiology (making certification in Nuclear Cardiology a preference)
• Supervises and interprets exercise stress tests
• Inserts permanent and temporary cardiac pacemakers (desirable)
• Inserts Swan Ganz catheters
• Participates in quality assurance programs and chart reviews.
• Serves on Medical Staff Committees
• Attends Medical Service staff meetings and meetings of the Medical/Dental staff
• Ensures communication with the incoming evening Medical Officer of the Day regarding patient care issues.
• Completes medical records using the electronic medical record system and following hospital documentation requirements.
• Completes mandatory training.
• Work hours are weekdays, 8:00 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., 0.4 FTEE / 32 hours during each 80 hour pay period. Call may be required in the future.

Physical requirements include a full range of physical activity, including lifting, pulling, pushing, reaching above the shoulder, use of fingers and both hands, walking, standing, repeated bending, ability for rapid mental and muscular coordination simultaneously. • Must pass pre-employment physical examination.

Required skills include:

• Proficient in written and spoken English.
• Degree of doctor of medicine or an equivalent degree resulting from a course of education in medicine or osteopathic medicine.
• Current, full and unrestricted license to practice medicine or surgery in a State, Territory, or Commonwealth of the United States, or in the District of Columbia.

Preferred experience includes B/E or B/C in Internal Medicine, and, B/E or B/C in the Cardiology subspecialty. Reference: VA Regulations, specifically VA Handbook 5005, Part II, Appendix G-2 Physician Qualification Standard. This can be found in the local Human Resources Office.
