Certified Nurse Midwife

Job Summary Midwifery as practiced by certified nurse-midwives (CNMs) encompasses the independent provision of care during pregnancy, childbirth, and the postpartum period; sexual and reproductive health; gynecologic health; and family planning services, including preconception care. Midwives also provide primary care for individuals from adolescence throughout the lifespan as well as care for the healthy newborn during the first 28 days of life. Provides related duties as required. In the context of providing midwifery care, the midwife may need to consult, collaborate, and/or refer to other members of the healthcare team. Duties & Essential Job Functions Determines status of labor; assesses premature rupture, amniotomy, IUPC, fetal scalp electrode, catheterization, IV fluid administration, episiotomy, medication; determines need for attending physician; initiates oxytocin induction; orders vital and fetal monitoring; assesses uterine contractions/bleeding; injects local anesthesia; performs and repairs episiotomy, 1st and 2nd degree lacerations; examines placental membranes and cord vessels; reports abnormal findings. Performs initial assessment of newborn status; assists airway, temperature regulation; initiates resuscitation if physician absent. Performs physical examinations including heart, lung, fundal height, fetal heart rates, Leopold’s maneuvers; vaginal exams, breast exams, pelvimetry; determines abnormalities and consults or refers to a physician. Provides telephone consultation and referrals; participates in patient and community education. Takes patient medical, social, and obstetric history; provides prenatal care; orders medications per protocols; documents care; conducts chart review and follow‑up. Writes H&P and admission orders; orders laboratories; supports patients during labor; teaches relaxation and breathing techniques; encourages support persons; independently manages low‑risk deliveries; co‑manages high‑risk deliveries; delivers patients with physician involvement; informs patient and family of progress; acts as consultant to house staff; manages complications until physician arrives. Determines appropriate discharge; writes postpartum orders; manages postpartum care; assesses need for referrals; signs birth certificate. Minimum Qualifications Graduate of an accredited Nursing Program (Bachelor’s degree in Nursing preferred). Graduate of Board‑approved program in Nurse‑Midwifery or equivalent accepted by the Board of Registered Nursing. Demonstrated experience consistent with the Core Competencies for Basic Midwifery Practice (Appendix A). Current Nurse‑Midwife certificate issued by the American College of Nurse‑Midwives. APS Perinatal Safety Modules completed within 3 months of hire. BLS – Basic Life Support certification from AHA. Must obtain Allied Health Staff Privileges with AHS. Current Nurse‑Midwife license issued by the Board of Registered Nursing of California. Valid Registered Nurse license in California. Pay Range Pay range: $124.66 – $143.20 per hour. Final compensation will be determined based on experience, education, licenses, certifications, departmental equity, and organizational needs.
