Route Manager

Job Summary:

The Route Manager is responsible for leading maintenance technicians, owning assigned routes and customers, and ensuring pools are serviced to company standards. This role focuses on technician development, route efficiency, service quality, customer retention, chemical management, inventory accountability, and proactive problem-solving.

Key Responsibilities:

· Oversee assigned weekly pool cleaning routes to ensure service is completed accurately, efficiently, and on schedule.

· Lead and support maintenance technicians through coaching, training, field observation, and accountability.

· Monitor pool quality, customer concerns, chemical usage, truck inventory, and route performance to identify and resolve issues early.

· Coordinate with the Operations Manager, Service Technicians, and other team members to address customer, equipment, staffing, and operational needs.

· Perform pool cleaning, route coverage, inspections, and other field duties as needed to support the team and protect service quality.

Team Leadership & Development:

· Lead, support, train, coach, and develop assigned maintenance technicians.

· Conduct regular ride-alongs and field observations to inspect work, reinforce standards, and provide constructive feedback.

· Help technicians improve skills in cleaning, water chemistry, equipment awareness, route efficiency, safety, and customer service.

· Set clear expectations, recognize strong performance, address performance concerns professionally, and escalate significant issues to the Operations Manager.

· Lead by example and help create a positive, accountable, high-performing team culture.

Route, Pool & Customer Ownership:

· Take ownership of the pools, customers, and routes assigned to their technicians.

· Review route completion, efficiency, scheduling, coverage, service history, and technician notes to identify trends or recurring issues.

· Inspect assigned pools regularly to verify service quality and identify problems before they become larger customer or operational issues.

· Own customer complaints, missed services, recurring concerns, and service follow-up to protect customer retention.

· Recognize when an issue requires a Service Technician and ensure it is clearly communicated and properly turned over.

Chemical Usage Management:

· Review chemical usage reports by pool and technician to compare actual usage against expected pool needs.

· Identify unusual or excessive chemical consumption and investigate possible causes, including leaks, equipment issues, water chemistry problems, testing errors, or technician practices.

· Coach technicians on proper testing, chemical application, documentation, and water quality standards.

· Use chemical data to improve pool health, technician performance, cost control, and route profitability while escalating significant concerns to the Operations Manager.

Inventory Accountability:

· Inspect technician truck inventory to ensure chemicals, supplies, tools, and equipment are properly stocked, organized, and ready for service.

· Compare inventory pulled, used, and remaining to identify discrepancies, waste, inaccurate reporting, or unusual consumption.

· Investigate missing, misplaced, damaged, or improperly stored equipment and supplies.

· Hold technicians accountable for company-owned tools, equipment, chemicals, and supplies while communicating significant concerns to the Operations Manager.

Qualifications:

Education

o High school diploma or GED; required

Experience

o 2+ years of pool maintenance, pool service, route service, or related field experience; preferred

o Previous leadership, training, scheduling, or route management experience; preferred

Technical Skills

o Working knowledge of pool cleaning, water chemistry, chemical handling, filtration systems, and basic equipment operation; required

o Ability to identify common equipment issues and communicate repair needs clearly; required

o Basic computer and mobile device skills, including email, calendar, and service management software; required

o Valid driver’s license and acceptable driving record; required

 

Physical Requirements:  

o Ability to work outdoors in heat, cold, wind, and other seasonal weather conditions

o Ability to stand, walk, bend, kneel, reach, pull, push, and perform repetitive physical tasks throughout the day

o Ability to lift and carry pool equipment, tools, chemical containers, and supplies as needed

o Ability to safely handle pool chemicals and follow company safety procedures

o Ability to work in a fast-paced environment, manage multiple priorities, and respond to changing route needs

Working Conditions:

• Primarily outdoors and in the field, with regular travel between customer locations and occasional office or warehouse time

Pay Type:

• Salary; based on qualifications

 

Position Type:

• Full-Time: Monday – Friday; schedule may vary based on season, weather, staffing, and route needs

• Occasional early mornings, evenings, weekends, or emergency support may be required
