Position Summary
The Nutritionist / Performance Dietitian provides full-time on-site support to the U.S. Border Patrol Academy in Artesia, New Mexico. The position serves as the academy's subject matter expert in performance nutrition and supports academy leadership, instructors, and trainees through nutrition education, body composition assessment, performance nutrition counseling, injury recovery support, and evidence-based nutrition programming designed to improve trainee health, readiness, resilience, and performance.
Place of Performance: U.S. Border Patrol Academy (USBPA), Artesia, New Mexico
Period of Performance: Base Year plus one (1) 12-month option period.
Schedule: Monday through Friday, approximately 7:00 AM – 4:00 PM Mountain Time (MT), subject to Government requirements.
Minimum Qualifications
- Bachelor's degree in Nutrition, Dietetics, or related field (Master's degree preferred).
- Current Registered Dietitian Nutritionist (RDN) credential.
- Current Basic Life Support (BLS) and CPR certification prior to start date.
- Minimum three (3) years of experience supporting tactical, military, law enforcement, or other high-risk occupational training environments.
- Demonstrated expertise in evidence-based nutrition, injury prevention, recovery support, and performance optimization.
- Strong communication, presentation, and instructional skills.
- Ability to work independently and within multidisciplinary teams.
Duties and Responsibilities
- Support the delivery of academy nutrition programs and educational initiatives.
- Provide nutrition instruction, performance nutrition briefings, and supplement safety education.
- Conduct nutrition assessments and body composition evaluations using approved methodologies.
- Provide individualized nutrition guidance related to performance, recovery, weight management, and overall health.
- Support nutrition education for high-risk trainees and injury recovery programs.
- Assist with review and interpretation of body composition and metabolic assessment data.
- Provide guidance regarding medical nutrition concerns including cholesterol management, blood pressure management, blood sugar control, gastrointestinal issues, and disordered eating concerns.
- Support dietary supplement review activities and provide evidence-based recommendations.
- Assist with development and maintenance of nutrition curriculum, educational materials, and instructor resources.
- Coordinate with the Exercise Physiologist and academy personnel to develop integrated performance and recovery strategies.
- Collect, analyze, and report nutrition and performance data.
- Track trends related to health, nutrition, injury risk, and trainee performance.
- Support academy wellness, fitness, hydration, and health promotion initiatives.
- Participate in academy meetings, musters, and training activities.
- Deliver educational workshops, seminars, and staff training sessions.
- Prepare weekly reports, observations, recommendations, and performance metrics as required.
- Conduct body composition assessments using InBody or similar methodologies.
- Provide guidance regarding dietary supplements and supplement safety.
- Support Early Recognition Program (ERP) nutrition briefings.
- Assist with nutrition education related to injury recovery and high-risk trainees.
- Advise on nutrition facility design, food selection, hydration, and wellness initiatives.
