Mechanic I

POSITION SUMMARY Under the supervision of the Pottawatomie County Shop Foreman, the Mechanic I is a non‑exempt position under FLSA. The primary goal is to perform skilled mechanical work and oversee the inspection, maintenance, and repair of all county equipment such as automotive vehicles, emergency equipment, and heavy construction equipment in accordance with established practices of the mechanic trade. ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS Perform routine inspections, maintenance, and minor repairs for county vehicles and equipment. Maintain regular and predictable attendance. Clean the shop area and store tools. Complete appropriate paperwork and records (e.g., work orders, shop tickets, daily labor & equipment records) for repairs and maintenance. Maintain safety equipment. Assist with storing, organizing, and inventorying large stocks of parts, supplies, and other commodities in a major repair facility and storage yard. Assist in annual property inventory. Assist in determining stocking levels for parts and supply inventories. Mount new tires including grader and semi tires. Wash, wax, and detail vehicles and equipment. Pick up and deliver parts, supplies, and other commodities; occasionally transport road and bridge equipment to and from repair facilities. Provide repair information to the shop clerk. Maintain good working relations with all other departments. MARGINAL FUNCTIONS Assist with loading and unloading materials including pipe. Operate welder, acetylene torch, and other metal fabrication tools. Answer and direct incoming telephone calls. Assist other employees as needed. Operate departmental equipment including loaders and forklifts. Assist in inventory of parts. Schedule equipment repairs on a priority basis. Perform other duties as deemed necessary or assigned. EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE A high school diploma or GED is required. A valid Class A Kansas Commercial Driver’s License (CDL) with proper endorsements (Tanker) is required or obtainable within six months of employment. Require one to two years of experience operating, inspecting, repairing or maintaining automotive and/or construction equipment. Knowledge and skill in using standard methods, practices, tools, and equipment of the mechanic trade. Knowledge of computer software applications and other automated fleet systems. Working knowledge of applicable work safety rules and procedures. WORKING CONDITIONS AND PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS The mechanic will primarily work in a shop or garage environment, which can be noisy, with exposure to mechanical equipment, tools, and machinery. They may be exposed to oil, grease, solvents, and other chemicals, so safety protocols must be followed. The work may be conducted indoors or outdoors, depending on the task, with exposure to various weather conditions. The role requires flexibility in hours, with the potential for overtime, evening, or weekend shifts, and on‑call work may also be required for emergency repairs. They must adhere to all relevant health and safety regulations and wear appropriate personal protective equipment (PPE), including gloves, goggles, steel‑toed boots, and any other necessary gear. They must be able to lift and carry tools, equipment, and parts weighing up to 50 lbs., and occasionally more with assistance or mechanical aids. Prolonged periods of standing, bending, kneeling, or crouching while working on vehicles or machinery. They must have manual dexterity to handle small parts and tools with precision. The job also involves climbing under vehicles, on lifts, and working in confined spaces, requiring the ability to stoop, crouch, and work in confined spaces. They must have clear vision, with or without corrective lenses, and good hearing to detect equipment malfunctions or unusual noises from vehicles. Physical stamina is required to complete long shifts, often in physically demanding environments. KNOWLEDGE, SKILL AND ABILITY Entry‑level knowledge and skill in using standard methods, practices, tools, and equipment of the mechanic trade; basic knowledge of the principles and operation of all types of engines and components. Ability to understand and apply technical service and repair manuals and carry out oral and written instructions. Work independently with little supervision and possesses mechanical aptitude. PROBLEM SOLVING Involves duties that require related steps and processing methods of a technical nature. Uses initiative in carrying out assignments and generally considers multiple options before making an independent decision. DECISION MAKING Requires ability to research and apply guidelines and manuals. Decisions involve recognizing the existence and differences among many related processes and methods. SUPERVISION/ACCOUNTABILITY Frequent to occasional supervision from the Pottawatomie County Shop Foreman and coworkers. FINANCIAL ACCOUNTABILITY Responsible for the safe operation of departmental equipment; limited purchasing authority; no participation in the annual budget process. PERSONAL RELATIONS Daily contact with vendors, co‑workers, and supervisory personnel; occasional contact with equipment dealers, general public, and elected and appointed officials.
