Mid-Level Application Developer - Java

Position Overview

We are seeking a Mid-Level Java Developer to join a highly collaborative engineering team supporting a large-scale application environment.

The ideal candidate is a strong hands-on individual contributor and technical problem solver who can independently troubleshoot application issues, identify root causes, get into the code, and implement solutions without significant technical direction or hand-holding.

Strong Java development skills are the primary requirement for this role. This position will involve a mix of application development, production troubleshooting, bug fixes, and enhancements. Engineers will also work closely with Client Services and other stakeholders to understand technical issues and drive them through resolution, so strong communication skills are important. Prior client-facing or Client Services experience is not required.

The team is looking for a mid-level engineer who is self-directed, proactive, adaptable, and comfortable taking ownership in a rapidly evolving environment. Engineers are also expected to leverage AI knowledge and modern AI-assisted development practices as part of their technical workflow.

Key Responsibilities

• Develop, enhance, troubleshoot, and support applications within a Java-based environment .
• Independently investigate application and production issues , identify root causes, modify code, and implement solutions.
• Own bugs, enhancements, and technical service requests from initial investigation through resolution.
• Work effectively with minimal technical guidance and proactively determine appropriate next steps.
• Partner with Client Services, engineering teams, and other stakeholders to understand technical issues and develop solutions.
• Clearly explain technical problems, findings, and solutions to both technical and non-technical stakeholders.
• Support applications and services operating within cloud-based environments.
• Work with databases, APIs, and application integrations as part of development and troubleshooting activities.
• Apply AI knowledge and AI-assisted development tools to coding, troubleshooting, testing, and solution delivery.
• Balance immediate production or client-impacting needs with appropriate longer-term technical solutions.
• Collaborate across engineering, QA, support, and business teams in a fast-moving environment.

Required Qualifications

• Strong hands-on Java development experience.
• Experience with Java/Spring or Spring Boot application development.
• Strong production/application troubleshooting and debugging skills , including the ability to independently diagnose and fix bugs and code-level issues.
• Demonstrated ability to break down complex technical problems, determine root causes, and implement solutions with minimal direction.
• Experience working with databases and SQL as part of application development and troubleshooting.
• Experience with APIs, microservices, or application integrations .
• AI knowledge and/or practical experience , including familiarity with AI-assisted software development.
• Strong verbal and written communication skills with the ability to work effectively with technical and non-technical stakeholders.
• Self-directed and proactive approach with a strong sense of ownership and accountability.
• Ability to adapt and operate effectively in a rapidly changing technical environment.

Preferred Qualifications

• Experience developing or supporting applications within AWS .
• Previous experience supporting a large-scale enterprise or SaaS application environment .
• Experience in a role combining application development with production/application support .
• Previous experience with the organization's existing HR/payroll technology platforms or environment.
• Experience modernizing or converting applications or services from Node.js to Java .
• Additional QA, testing, or test automation experience .
• Experience communicating directly with external clients or customers regarding technical issues.

Ideal Candidate

The strongest candidate will be a hands-on Java engineer first . You should be comfortable receiving a technical issue, breaking it down, identifying the root cause, getting into the code and fixing it independently , and driving the solution through completion.

This role does require strong communication skills and interaction with Client Services and other stakeholders, but previous client-facing experience is not required . Technical strength, problem-solving ability, ownership, and the ability to operate independently are the highest priorities.
