Graphics/Multimedia Editor - Data and Tooling, Election Analytics New York, NY; Washington, DC Mission : The New York Times seeks the truth and helps people understand the world through independent journalism. The Election Analytics team produces flagship election coverage, including the live statistical model known as the Needle and the New York Times/Siena Poll, relying on one of the most comprehensive election data operations in media. We are just beginning to explore the ways we can combine the voter file and other data—absentee files, precinct‑level results, live turnout figures, poll results—to create compelling stories. Our tooling has not always kept pace with our ambitions. Responsibilities Own and maintain end‑to‑end data pipelines for the voter file and other election data, ensuring reliability, automation, and consistent formats. Develop and maintain libraries in R that underpin our applications. Build tooling to support, deploy, and monitor R apps on Google Cloud and Amazon Web Services. Onboard colleagues to existing tools and develop new tooling as needed. Balance engineering principles with the need for rapid news coverage. Demonstrate support for journalistic independence and a commitment to our mission. Collaborate with journalists to transform data into new formats and products. Contribute to elections coverage beyond data engineering, including original reporting and story/graphic/tool development. Qualifications 5+ years of relevant work experience. Experience with large data sets and best practices in data management. Proficiency in data‑oriented programming languages such as R or Python, including package or library development and debugging. Experience with cloud computing providers (Google Cloud Platform or Amazon Web Services). Track record of solving complex problems and creating original solutions. Ability to meet tight deadlines and make trade‑off decisions. Collaborative experience across diverse teams. Willingness to work a flexible schedule to support elections and polls. Preferred Qualifications Journalistic experience or interest, particularly on elections. Experience developing ETL pipelines, orchestration tooling, and ensuring reliability and observability. Experience with Google BigQuery or other OLAP databases and data warehousing patterns. Experience building productionized applications. Prior experience in a newsroom environment or similar fast‑paced setting. R shop experience (though prior R experience is not a necessity). Benefits Annual base pay range: $113,945.85 – $170,000 USD. Potential variable pay such as an annual bonus and restricted stock.
