JOB SUMMARY: Under limited supervision, provides professional oncology nursing services in to accomplish individual patient plan of care, and support the operations of the Oncology Programs

REPRESENTATIVE DUTIES Provides specialized oncology nursing care to patients in a hospital or clinic setting. Performs complex nursing procedures and prescribed medical treatments.

Interviews and observes patient to ascertain medical history and current condition. Assesses and documents in the electronic health record current condition and reports significant changes to physician. Assures patient safety and stability.

Validates chemotherapy orders for accuracy for both inpatient and outpatient chemotherapy patients and other physician orders.

Administers multi-dose chemotherapy regimens, biotherapies, immunotherapies, blood products, and other medications for oncology and other Specialty Clinic and Primary Care patients. Manages hypersensitivity reactions to complex medication regimens.

Collaborates with interdisciplinary professional staff to ensure appropriate diagnostic testing and treatments are performed. 

Performs assessment and triage of telephone and walk-in patients; evaluates symptoms, and determines essential care required. Identifies patient needs and healthcare problems; develops goals, service delivery protocols, and nursing plans of care; evaluates patient progress and modifies care plans as needed. Records and reports all information within scope of authority. Provides medical case management according to oncology program and physician guidelines.

Maintains records, inventory and physical security of drugs and medical supplies; orders and requests supplies as needed. Performs laboratory work, prepares specimens for laboratory; reviews laboratory tests results; notifies patients of test results, and physicians of critical lab values.

Accesses and de-accesses central lines, starts peripheral IV lines, performs dressing changes for PICC lines and Hickman’s and removes PICC lines when ordered.

Clinical resource on chemotherapy administration for inpatient nurses: provides 4 hour clinical introduction to chemotherapy administration to inpatient nurses; supplements RN coverage for inpatient chemotherapy administration when needed.

Educates patients and families about cancer diagnosis, prognosis and treatment options. Instructs individual patients and family on follow-up care, toxicity and side effects of chemotherapy and radiation therapy.

Coordinates and assists in clinical follow-up planning. 

Manages the interface between the patient and medical technology to ensure that a safe, respectful and humane environment is maintained. Provides consultation and information on continuity of care, complex treatment modalities, and additional health and social services available to the patient.

Performs administrative duties; receives, logs in and files a variety of reports, client charts, client interactions and other documents. Enters patient care information into computer system, and reviews for accuracy.

Evaluates one’s own nursing practice in relation to professional practice standards and relevant statutes and regulations, identifying short and long term professional goals.

Utilizes the ANA Scope and Standards of Practice and the Code of Ethics for Nurses with Interpretive Statements as the foundation for nursing practice.

Interacts with and contributes to the professional development of peers and others practicing in a Shared Governance model of nursing practice.

Makes decisions so that actions taken on behalf of patients are determined in an ethical manner, and care is delivered in a nonjudgmental and nondiscriminatory manner that is sensitive to patient diversity preserving patient autonomy, dignity, and rights.

Collaborates with the patient, family, and other health care providers in the formation of overall goals and the plan of care, as well as in decisions related to care and the delivery of services.

Considers factors related to safety, effectiveness, evidence based-practice, and cost in planning & delivering patient care, and assists the patient and family in identifying and securing appropriate and available services to address health-related needs.

Directs the day to day duties of the CMA’s.

Performs other duties as assigned.

Required Experience

MINIMUM EDUCATION QUALIFICATION Associates degree in Nursing.

MINIMUM EXPERIENCE QUALIFICATION Non-supervisory – None

MINIMUM CERTIFICATION QUALIFICATION Current registered nurse license in the State of Alaska. Current BLS card required. 

PREFERRED EDUCATION QUALIFICATION Bachelor’s degree in nursing

PREFERRED EXPERIENCE QUALIFICATION One (1) year of oncology experience

WORKING CONDITIONS The following demands are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this job: Must be able to lift approximately 50 pounds. ANMC is not a latex free facility; an employee should expect to work in an environment where latex may be present. Work involves the potential for exposure to infectious diseases and hazardous drugs.
