LICENSED PRACTICAL NURSE

Department: JUVENILE SERVICES D Job Family: PROFESSIONAL Target Hiring Range: $51,627.78 - $62,039.23 - Based on Experience General Statement Of Responsibilities Under close supervision, this position provides basic medical care and treatment to juveniles detained in the residential programs of the Department of Juvenile Services. Reports to the Health Services Administrator. Essential Job Functions Follows established medical protocol to provide basic medical care and treatment to Juvenile Detention residents to include assessing individual medical complaints, height, weight, temperature, pulse, respiration, blood pressure, and vision. Obtains medical history, including possible allergies, chronic health problems, drug abuse, and other pertinent information. Confers with parents to obtain health insurance information. Coordinates with physicians, other nurses, probation officers, social workers, therapists, parents, etc., regarding residents physical and emotional health matters. Administers first aid and appropriate routine medical treatments as directed by licensed physicians and in accordance with regulatory and licensing protocols. Makes appointments for residents with various health clinics, doctors offices, and makes determines urgency of care needed based on assessments; contacts physician for assistance and coordinates hospital emergency room visits when necessary. Responsible for administering prescribed medications in accordance with the State Board of Pharmacy guidelines and physicians directions. Instructs detention supervisory staff in providing prescribed medication and treatment when licensed medical staff is not available. Monitors medication refill status and orders medication refills as needed. Maintains a medical record for each Juvenile Detention resident in accordance with the Department of Juvenile Justice standards; maintains daily records of medication and treatment administered; ensures compliance with the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA). Performs other duties as assigned.

Knowledge of medications, their uses, and potential adverse effects, including narcotics, mood altering, and behavior control drugs. Knowledge of local healthcare facilities and resources, including but not limited to local hospitals, mental health agencies, and private physicians.
