Job Description:
The IFAS Department Animal Sciences (ANS) is seeking an individual for a full-time position who will be responsible for advising undergraduate students in the ANS major. The role includes advising and helping ANS students with course selection and scheduling, running degree audits, and discussing career options to meet educational needs and realize student scholastic goals. The incumbent also assists with organization of undergraduate student events, recruiting, and contributes to improvement of overall academic advising. This position is ideal for an organized, self-motivated individual with a genuine interest in the success and well-being of ANS undergraduate students.

Duties and responsibilities include but are not limited to:

Under general supervision, provide individual academic advising to assigned ANS undergraduate students. Conduct degree audits, verify progress toward degree and critical-tracking requirements, evaluate transfer and articulated credit, and certify candidates for graduation. Maintain accurate advising notes and documentation in University systems.

Advise students on course selection and term-by-term scheduling. Assist with registration, holds, schedule adjustments, drops and withdrawals, overrides, and petitions for exceptions to academic policy. Advise on selection of majors, minors, certificates, and specializations within the ANS curriculum. A portion of this effort is conducted through email, phone, and social media.

Discuss career options and post-graduation planning with students, including preparation for professional and graduate programs, industry employment, undergraduate research, internships, and study abroad. Advise on prerequisite planning for veterinary and other professional school admission and refer students to the Career Connections Center and other campus resources as appropriate.

Help conduct proactive outreach to students identified as academically at risk, including those on academic probation, with excess hours, or off critical tracking. Support development of individualized plans for return to good standing and refer students to appropriate University support services.

Responsible for or assist with organization of undergraduate student events such as new student orientation and recruiting. This includes events on campus or outside of Gainesville.

Contribute to improvement of overall academic advising, including the development of advising materials.

Maintain electronic databases of undergraduate student data in cooperation with the Department, College of Agriculture and Life Sciences (CALS) and UF. Schedule courses and classrooms. Assist the undergraduate coordinator with administrative tasks and communications with faculty and staff.

Stay abreast of educational and administrative rules and policies related to student advising.

Assist in evaluating new teaching resources and equipment and new multimedia resources. Recommend new and improved programs and/or technologies to help faculty effectively deliver educational programs and improve student experience.

Other duties as assigned by the supervisor.

Normal Work Schedule:

Monday-Friday 8:00 am to 5:00pm (40 hours per week). Some variations in schedule may occur for departmental events held outside of regular office hours.

Expected Salary:
$50,000 annually commensurate with education and experience

Required Qualifications:
Master's degree in education, counseling, or academic field related to the college OR Bachelor's degree in similar fields with one year of relevant experience.

Valid driver's license

Preferred:
Master's degree in education, counseling, or an academic field directly related to the advisor's area of responsibility; or some formal training in an area of study related to animal sciences.
Experience in advising and counseling students at the undergraduate level.
Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
Working knowledge of UF regulations and procedures to facilitate student counseling. Affinity with the teaching, research and Extension mission of the Department of Animal Sciences.
