Senior Magnet Engineer (Oak Ridge)

Full-time

Cryomagnetics, Inc.

Senior Magnet Engineer | Cryomagnetics, Inc. | Oak Ridge, Tennessee | On-site, full-time

About us

Cryomagnetics designs and builds superconducting magnets and cryogenic systems for universities, national laboratories, and industrial customers around the world. We've been in business for more than 40 years and have earned many SBIR/STTR awards along the way. We're a team of about 65, and most of what we ship is custom. Engineers own their designs from the customer's first spec sheet to the day the magnet passes its cold test.

The role

We're hiring a Senior Magnet Engineer to lead custom superconducting magnet designs and help grow our high temperature superconductor work. Most of the day-to-day work is LTS magnets in NbTi and Nb3Sn. You'll own the design, analysis, and build support for systems that end up in research labs worldwide. We have HTS R&D underway now, and we want to take it further, toward REBCO and Bi-2212 magnet products we can build and sell. If you've wound and tested HTS coils, you'll have a real say in how we do that here. You'll report to our Engineering Manager and work closely with production and testing. Junior engineers will look to you for design review and mentoring.

What you'll do

  • Own custom magnet designs from customer specification through production, cold test, and delivery
  • Run electromagnetic, field quality, mechanical, and quench protection analysis using both commercial software and our in-house design tools
  • Design and verify quench protection methods for the systems you own
  • Work with the winding and assembly floor to make designs buildable, and solve problems when they come up
  • Answer technical questions from customers and help sales scope new systems
  • Review junior engineers' work and impart your knowledge in a structured, highly collaborative environment
  • Contribute to REBCO and Bi-2212 development, including coil design, test planning, and the production methods that will get HTS magnets into the hands of our customers worldwide

Required qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in engineering or physics. A graduate degree is a plus.
  • 5+ years designing superconducting magnets, including at least one magnet you took from design through cold test
  • Experience with electromagnetic FEA such as COMSOL, Opera, or ANSYS
  • Comfort on the shop floor, being willing and able to work closely with production staff.
  • Clear technical writing for design documentation and test reports, and communication skills with colleagues and customers
  • Able to work on-site in Oak Ridge, TN full time. Occasional remote work is allowed.

Preferred qualifications

  • Design experience with HTS magnets or coils using REBCO tape and/or Bi-2212
  • Solid working knowledge of LTS conductors (NbTi, Nb3Sn), magnet forces and stress, and quench behavior and protection
  • HTS quench detection and protection, including the challenges of slow normal zone propagation, no-insulation and partial-insulation windings, and the detection methods that suit them
  • HTS production experience, such as tape handling, joints and terminations, winding, and impregnation
  • Cryocooler-conducted magnet systems or magnets designed for dilution refrigerator integration
  • Persistent switches and superconducting joints
  • Computational software proficiency for design calculations and test data analysis
  • Practical use of AI in engineering work

Growth and tooling

This is a senior design seat at a company where your work shows up in the product quickly. Your HTS experience would help shape our product line. We encourage practical use of our internal AI tools for design, analysis, and documentation, within defined procedures for protecting proprietary design data. Performance is reviewed at six months, at twelve months, and annually after that, with pay and responsibilities moving alongside demonstrated capability.

Compensation and benefits

Six-figure salary, dependent on experience. Full-time exempt. Health, dental, vision, and life insurance, 401(k) matching, and a competitive PTO policy. To apply, send your resume to View email address on apply.placed-app.com
