CNC Swiss-Type Lathe Machinist

A Day in the Life

You clock in, review the day’s work orders, and pull up the setup sheets. Raw bar stock is staged, tooling is verified, and your Swiss-style CNC lathe is warmed up. You load material, check offsets, and kick off the first production cycle. While the machine runs, you’re on the gauges—calipers, micrometers, indicators—confirming in-process dimensions. A slight deviation? You make precise offsets and minor adjustments to keep parts on target. You record measurements, monitor cycle times, and collaborate with quality or engineering when a blueprint calls for extra scrutiny. Before the shift ends, your station is spotless, documentation is complete, and another batch of high-precision components is ready to ship.

What You’ll Do

• Operate Swiss-type CNC lathes to produce precision components in a fast-paced environment.
• Load raw material and unload finished parts safely and efficiently.
• Monitor machine operation, production cycles, and part quality throughout the run.
• Perform in-process and final inspections using calipers, micrometers, gauges, and other precision metrology tools.
• Make basic offsets and machine adjustments to maintain quality and throughput.
• Read and interpret blueprints, work instructions, engineering drawings, and setup sheets.
• Follow established tooling instructions and quality procedures to ensure repeatability.
• Identify tooling, machine, or quality issues and promptly notify the appropriate team members.
• Maintain accurate production and inspection records.
• Keep your work area clean, organized, and compliant with safety requirements.
• Adhere to all company quality, safety, and production procedures.

Qualifications Required

• 1–3+ years of CNC machining or machine operator experience (Swiss experience strongly preferred).
• Hands-on experience operating Swiss CNC machines is a plus.
• Ability to read and understand mechanical drawings and blueprints.
• Skilled with precision measuring instruments (calipers, micrometers, gauges, etc.).
• Basic understanding of CNC processes, tooling, feeds, and speeds.
• High attention to detail and a strong commitment to quality.
• Ability to work independently and collaboratively within a team.
• Reliable attendance and strong work ethic.

Preferred

• Experience with Citizen, Star, Tsugami, Tornos, or Hanwha Swiss machines.
• Familiarity with Fanuc, Mitsubishi, or Siemens controls.
• Background machining stainless steel, brass, aluminum, titanium, or medical components.
• Knowledge of GD&T.
• Experience with SPC or other quality-control methodologies.
