JOB SUMMARY

To maintain the safe conduct of students to and from school and to aid the bus driver as needed.

SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES

NONE

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITES

• Regular and punctual attendance required: full compliance with TCSS sick leave policy.
• Maintain a courteous, helpful, cooperative attitude with all transportation personnel, bus drivers, other board personnel, and the general public.
• Respect the confidentiality of information pertaining to students and staff and the school system.
• Cooperate fully with school administrators and staff in dealing with student behaviors and physical management.
• Ensure safety of students by:

1. buckling them in their seats and securing wheel chairs before bus starts
2. keeping them seated and under control during transportation
3. assisting them when crossing the street
4. assisting them during loading and unloading at home and at school
5. escorting them to the responsible adult at school.

• Account for students' personal belongings and messages.
• Assist bus driver with keeping updated file of students assigned to bus.
• Familiarize self with and uses:

1. assistance request forms
2. safety equipment located on bus
3. emergency procedures
4. bus route and pick-up points
5. wheel chair lift and locking equipment.

• Deal with emergency physical problems during loading, transporting and unloading.
• Notify school officials of unusual events or behaviors.
• Contact and obtain acceptable substitute when absent.
• Assume other transportation-related duties as assigned by supervisor.
• Understand and assist in upholding system rules, policies, and procedures.
• Follow correct procedure for signing in daily and securing substitutes.
• Keep board related business confidential.
• Assume other reasonable and equitable job-related duties as assigned by the supervisor.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

• EDUCATION AND/OR EXPERIENCE

High school graduate or equivalent (GED) and academic competency in basic skills. Valid Alabama driver's license. Participation in pre-service and in-service bus driver training programs. Background clearance through FBI and ABI processes.

Meet and follow the health, age and drug screening requirements of BCS.

• LANGUAGE SKILLS

Fluency in written and spoken English is essential. Organized thought processes, polite and respectful of others.

• PHYSICAL DEMANDS

Good physical and emotional health, including ability to lift and restrain students of varying age levels and sizes. Bend, stoop, crawl, kneel, reach, pull, turn, balance, and climb steps on a daily basis. Use arms and legs in work requirements. Enter and exit rear door of bus without assistance. Physical dexterity, coordination, mobility, and aural and visual acuity to operate a school bus.

• WORK ENVIRONMENT

Ability to observe and execute duties consistent with that of the special needs student.

Ability to comprehend and interpret both oral and written directives. Physical ability needed to lift and restrain students of varying age levels and sizes. Ability to work with or without supervision. Ability to communicate effectively with the public in a courteous manner and work harmoniously with other employees. Ability to work outdoors in a variety of conditions and temperatures including loud noises.

Breach of said professional conduct includes but is not limited to: neglect of duty, dishonesty, and engagement in acts that are contrary to TCSS policy, unlawful activities, or any other conduct which is seriously prejudicial to the school system and/or violates the Alabama Educator Code of Ethics.
