Job Purpose Join Gonzaga University as a Journeyman Electrician and play a pivotal role in enhancing, preserving, and revitalizing our campus infrastructure. You will improve, maintain, and repair university property across dormitories, food services, administration, academic buildings, and outdoor spaces. Your contributions directly ensure safety, functionality, and aesthetic appeal of the campus. Essential Functions 90% – Journeyman Electrician Install, maintain, and operate campus electrical systems across various voltage levels and associated equipment. Perform preventive maintenance, breakdown repair, troubleshooting, construction, installation, and fabrication typical of the trade. Execute mathematical calculations required for the trade. Respond to after‑hours and weekend calls and emergency calls as required. Maintain cleanliness of work area and surrounding areas. Stay current with National Electric Code and local codes. Maintain and repair campus fire alarm systems, electronic access control systems, motor relays, magnetic starters, transformers, and associated wiring. Maintain comprehensive knowledge of campus electrical systems. Install electrical circuits and panels in compliance with current code requirements. Understand electrical symbols and interpretation of building and electrical drawings. Inspect, test, and isolate defects in wiring, switches, motors, and other equipment using testing instruments. Locate faults such as blown fuses, short circuits, broken wires, loose connections, and worn components. Implement planned preventive maintenance activities to extend equipment life. Maintain medium‑voltage distribution system (7620/13,200 V). Use test equipment such as volt‑ammeters, voltage testers, phase and rotation testers, multimeters, and others to troubleshoot. Operate campus high voltage system, replace fuses, splice cables, phase circuits, and re‑establish service during outages. Use high‑voltage personal protective equipment where required. Program automated lighting circuits, computer‑controlled switching circuits, and other programmable equipment using computers and networks. Maintain and program variable frequency drives for motors, pumps, and fans. Install and maintain engine generators, uninterruptible power supplies, automatic transfer switches, etc. Complete work orders, job sheets, and estimates. Perform cost accounting for project materials and labor. Translate conceptual ideas into cost‑effective, functional products. Manage projects including design, estimating, material identification, and time management. Procure parts and equipment through university resources or appropriate vendors. Apply skills in other maintenance crafts as needed. Meet the physical and environmental demands of these duties. 10% – Additional duties as assigned Educational Requirements High School Diploma or GED. Years of Related Experience 5 years of relevant experience, or equivalently one year of experience for each year of required education. Certifications and Licenses Journeyman Electrical license. Valid driver’s license with a clean record. Skills and Abilities Install, maintain, troubleshoot, and repair low, medium, and high voltage electrical systems. Diagnose and resolve electrical issues using test equipment and systematic problem‑solving. Understand National Electrical Code, state/local regulations, and safe work practices including PPE and lockout/tagout. Read and apply electrical schematics, drawings, and specifications accurately. Manage multiple work orders and projects, estimate labor and materials, prioritize assignments, and maintain documentation. Use computerized building automation, programmable lighting, VFDs, and work‑order systems. Collaborate with coworkers, contractors, vendors, and the university community. Physical and On‑Campus Requirements Must work on‑site five days per week. Must stand or sit for prolonged periods (>75 % of time). Must walk to accomplish tasks (>75 % of time). Must lift or carry up to specified weight (e.g., 50 lb) >75 % of time. Must have strong attention to detail (>75 % of time). Must solve problems effectively (>75 % of time).
