Senior Director, Corporate Communications
$142k - $190kTIAA Financial Services
The Corporate Communications job oversees and advises on organizational communications across a wide range of internal and external materials and media. As a recognized expert in communications, this role manages reputation and field enablement activities, supports proactive media relations, develops methods to analyze and track media engagement, and improves the efficiency and effectiveness of communications across the enterprise. The role serves as a critical integration point between corporate communications strategy and client-facing teams, ensuring consistent, accurate, and timely messaging across all channels.
Key Responsibilities and DutiesContent Management and Issues Monitoring:
- Develops, maintains, and continuously expands a robust library of communications resources — including talking points, Q&A documents, and template correspondence — for use by client-facing teams across the enterprise. Monitors and updates these materials on an ongoing basis in response to legislative developments, market volatility, company announcements, and other emerging topics to ensure content remains accurate, timely, and actionable. Compiles and distributes quarterly summaries of reputational risk activity for Risk and Compliance stakeholders.
Media Monitoring and Tracking:
- Partners with the public relations team to support ongoing media monitoring efforts, including tracking the organization's earned media coverage, share of voice, and performance across key subject areas. Contributes to the production of regular media monitoring reports that inform communications strategy and help leadership understand the organization's presence and positioning in the media landscape.
Field Communications and Communications Council:
- Serves as an integration point for topics of relevance to client-facing team members, maintaining consistent contact with communicators embedded across business lines. Leads and hosts the weekly Communications Council, which brings together communicators from across the enterprise. Writes, formats, and distributes a weekly field newsletter to keep client-facing staff informed on key topics. Responds to inquiries from frontline staff as needed on topics where communications guidance has been provided.
Written Communications:
- Develops customized letters for client relationship teams addressing critical issues, including responses from advocacy groups. Creates client letters for remediation efforts targeted to advisors, plan sponsors, and individual participants. Provides template emails to accelerate responsiveness on client inquiries. Advises on and contributes to the written complaints function on key topics such as regulatory settlements. Writes letters and briefing materials to support executive client visits, group events, and relationship-building initiatives.
Executive, Business Unit, and Brand Media Relations Support:
- Partners with business leaders at TIAA Ventures to support media relations efforts and raise the external profile and visibility of the venture arm, including developing press materials, coordinating media opportunities, and helping shape narratives that support TIAA Ventures' strategic goals. Supports the press and external visibility of the Chief Marketing Officer, including earned media efforts tied to key brand and marketing initiatives across the enterprise. Provides occasional support to the Vice President of Corporate Communications on press and media relations activities for the Chief Executive Officer, assisting as needed with materials, coordination, and other media relations tasks.
Crisis and Issues Response:
- Serves as a communications representative throughout the full lifecycle of emerging issues and incidents — from early monitoring through post-incident response. Coordinates with operational risk management and business continuity teams to identify and evaluate emerging issues, drawing on established playbooks to develop media, social media, and client-response materials in a timely manner, and engaging external public relations support as needed. Participates on post-incident response teams, preparing talking points, external statements, and holding statements, and coordinating review with Legal given the sensitive nature of these situations. Participates in annual crisis simulation exercises and may serve as Business Continuity Leader for the Corporate Communications Business Continuity Plan and as a representative on the Corporate Resilience Committee.
Core Communications Leadership:
- Directs communications project timing and progress to ensure timely delivery of final drafts. Coordinates with internal and/or external print and design vendors on publication production and distribution. Provides expertise to managers and senior executives on developing organizational messages and translating them into appropriate communication formats that maintain clarity and accuracy. Develops communication strategies for organizational initiatives in alignment with goals from senior leadership.
