Nature of Work Under general supervision, performs technical work of moderate difficulty in law enforcement and investigative duties. Responsibilities include: Patrol assigned area to prevent crime, enforce laws and protect life and property. Respond to emergency and non‑emergency calls for service. Conduct preliminary and follow‑up investigations on crimes and traffic collisions. Make arrests, detain and search suspects, and issue citations or arrest for civil and criminal law violations. Interview witnesses, victims, and criminals. Prepare and maintain detailed reports and documentation. Secure accident and crime scenes and maintain chain of evidence. Provide first aid as needed. Transport and book arrestees. Assist in surveillance work. Execute writs, subpoenas, and court orders. Appear in court to present evidence or testify as a witness. Maintain patrol vehicle and equipment according to department standards. Conduct community awareness activities. Perform other duties as assigned. Work Environment / Physical Demands Work is performed outdoors and in a general office environment, including a variety of scheduled shifts, irregular hours, and on‑call status. Physical demands include: Moderate agility for pursuing offenders on foot and for subduing resisting offenders using necessary force, including deadly force. Maneuvering over paved, gravel, rough, uneven, slippery, or turf areas; climbing elevations. Exposure to dirt, dust, pollen, inclement weather, extreme temperatures, traffic hazards, bodily fluids, communicable diseases, hazardous chemicals, firearms, evidence, unpleasant odors, remote or isolated areas, and potentially hazardous or life‑threatening situations. Repeated bending, reaching, kneeling, crouching, standing, and sitting for extended periods. Lifting and pulling up to 165 pounds in emergency situations. Operating law enforcement tools such as handguns, batons, and other weapons, as well as motor vehicles, computers, and two‑way radios. Qualifications High School Diploma or GED equivalent; AND Arizona Peace Officer Standards and Training Certification within one (1) year of appointment; OR an equivalent combination of education and experience. Additional Requirements Successfully complete a background check, physical, psychological and polygraph examinations, and drug test prior to appointment. Be at least 21 years of age and a United States citizen. Possess and maintain a valid driver’s license. Willing to submit to random drug testing. Able to work all three shifts (days, afternoons, and graveyards), holidays, and weekends. Knowledge and Skills Knowledge of: Yuma County policies and procedures. County, state and federal laws, regulations, and ordinances. Sheriff’s Department policies and procedures. Law enforcement principles, methods, practices, equipment, and procedures. Geography, roads, and streets of Yuma County. Law enforcement investigation principles. Bloodborne pathogens and hazardous materials, conditions and devices. Skills in: Learning and applying law enforcement principles, rules, techniques, and proper use of issued equipment. Managing situations firmly, courteously, tactfully, and impartially. Applying good judgment and making effective decisions under pressure. Using firearms, motor vehicles, and other law enforcement equipment. Preparing clear, comprehensive, and accurate reports. Interviewing and dealing with people of diverse backgrounds. Administering first aid and CPR. Establishing and maintaining effective working relationships with employees, other agencies, and the public. Operating computerized technology and job‑related software applications.
