Job Overview

The Surgical Technician, under the supervision of a Registered Nurse, plays a crucial role in ensuring the safety and care of surgical patients. This position involves assisting the physician with both the preparation and technical aspects of surgical procedures, particularly in the role of the scrub person.

Location

Melrose/Wakefield Hospital - 585 Lebanon Street - Melrose, MA

Hours

• 40 hours per week (Four 10-hour shifts) from 7 AM to 5:30 PM with alternating days off
• On-call shifts approximately every 6 weeks from 7 AM to 7 PM
• Weekend shifts required every other Saturday and Sunday, along with holiday rotation
• Flexibility for peer coverage within the department is essential

Minimum Qualifications

• High school diploma or equivalent
• Completion of an accredited Surgical Technology Program or hold a Massachusetts Licensed Practical Nurse (LPN) license
• Surgical Technician certification from an accredited program or obtained within 12 months of program completion
• Basic Life Support (BLS) certification
• A minimum of two (2) years of experience in an Operating Room setting

Preferred Qualifications

• Four (4) years of experience in an Operating Room

Duties and Responsibilities

The following duties and responsibilities outline the general nature of the work involved and are not exhaustive. Additional tasks may be assigned as needed:

• Assist in preparing for specific surgical procedures according to established Surgical Services protocols and individual physician preferences, including updating physician preference cards.
• Prepare individual case carts with the necessary instruments and equipment for upcoming surgeries, and inform the Clinical Practice Leader of any issues.
• Act as the scrub person during surgical procedures, maintaining a sterile field, anticipating the surgeon's needs, passing instruments, and keeping accurate counts of sponges, sharps, and instruments in collaboration with the RN and physicians.
• Perform technical tasks excluding cutting, clamping, and suturing of tissues.
• Apply electrocautery to clamps (not tissue) on bleeders under the surgeon's supervision.
• Assist the RN/Transporter in moving patients to designated areas and prepare surgical specimens for the circulating nurse to identify and label for the clinical laboratory.
• May assist anesthesiologists and other staff in setting up equipment and procuring emergency supplies.
