Bible League International's Bible Translation Department selects, trains, and provides support for translation teams to produce Easy-to-Read translations of the Bible. Our translation projects are selected according to the needs determined in collaboration with ministry partners.

Our projects are published and used in Scripture Engagement activities focusing on the spiritual formation of individuals and their communities. The Associate Translation Consultant assists in monitoring the progress and quality control of projects. The Associate Translation Consultant checks the quality of a translation by its faithfulness to the original languages (Hebrew, Greek, and Aramaic) and its clarity and readability for the receptor audiences. Both are done in keeping with the best contemporary biblical, missiological, and translation scholarship.

The Bible Translation department is in our Hurst, Texas, USA, office until July 2026. After that, our team will be remote.

Duties

1. Assist Vice President of Bible Translation in all areas related to successful implementation and completion of translation projects.
2. Perform exegetical checking of back translations from BLI projects.
3. Participate in the exegetical checking procedures with translators.
4. Assist in the planning and organization of translation projects.
5. Assist in recruiting and training new project teams.
6. Assist in field-testing new translations.
7. Assist in the development and revision of resources for translators.
8. Write articles on translation related subjects for publication (academic or otherwise).
9. Travel as necessary to fulfill the above responsibilities. International travel required between 10%-15% of the year. Domestic travel is anticipated.
10. Review the content of Scripture-based materials and participate in the creation of these materials.
11. Perform other duties as assigned.

Organizational Relationships

Responsible to: VP of Bible Translation

Collaborates with: Translation staff (both domestic and abroad), other translation organizations and Bible agencies, Program Development, and other Bible League International departments as needed.

Qualifications

1. Must be a Christian, having a personal relationship with Jesus Christ. Must also agree with our statement of faith and conduct his/herself in a Christ-like manner.
2. Earned doctorate in biblical studies, or a Master's degree in biblical studies with a doctorate in a discipline related to translation (such as linguistics).
3. 5 to 10 years of translation experience preferred.
4. Competence in all three biblical languages required. Preferred concentration in Old Testament (a specialization in Wisdom literature would be a plus). Broad familiarity with ancient Near East history and cultures as well as Second Temple Judaism and the Greco-Roman world. Competence in the methods of current biblical exegesis and interpretation.
5. Appreciate and understand the principles of functional equivalence/meaning-based translation with the ability to apply these principles. Must be able to apply insights from linguistic and translation scholarship to ensure that a translation is properly contextualized for the chosen audience.
6. Cross-cultural experience is required.
7. Ministry experience is preferred.
8. Experience working in translation projects is preferred.
9. Possess a working knowledge of another modern language besides English (oral fluency preferred).
10. Ability to work independently and cooperatively with team members, including those from other theological and ecclesiastical traditions.
11. Possess conflict resolution skills applicable to cross-cultural situations.
12. Ability to write and communicate clearly and simply.
13. Ability to accept constructive feedback and reach consensus on disputed points.
14. Ability to organize projects and cooperate in the planning and development of translation projects.
15. Appreciation of Bible League International's purpose of creating products to meet the needs of ministry partners and churches.

You will meet with your manager quarterly in alignment with our fiscal year to discuss your accomplishments and priorities.
