Job Title: Phlebotomist I (Float)

Location: 1160 Varnum Street, Suite 106, Washington, DC

Coverage Area: Maryland & Washington, DC (including College Park, Silver Spring, and surrounding locations)

Duration: 3-Month Assignment

Schedule: 7-7 M-F, will only work an 8-hour day but our earliest site opens at 7am so they have to be available. Latest site closes at 6pm.


Weekends as needed, can be available if OT is wanted

Job Summary

We are seeking a reliable and experienced Phlebotomist I (Float) to support multiple Patient Service Centers (PSCs), physician offices, clinics, and other laboratory locations throughout Maryland and Washington, DC. This is a contract-to-hire opportunity ideal for a well-rounded phlebotomist who is comfortable working independently, traveling between locations, and performing blood collections on patients of all ages.

The ideal candidate will have strong venipuncture skills, specimen processing experience, excellent customer service, and the flexibility to adapt to different work environments while maintaining the highest standards of patient care and specimen integrity.

Key Responsibilities

• Perform venipuncture and specimen collection on pediatric, adult, and geriatric patients using straight and butterfly needles.
• Collect blood, urine, and other laboratory specimens following established laboratory procedures.
• Process specimens by labeling, centrifuging, aliquoting, freezing, and preparing samples for transport.
• Verify patient information and ensure laboratory requisitions match specimen labels with 100% accuracy.
• Maintain specimen integrity by following proper handling, storage, and transportation procedures.
• Accurately document patient information and collection activities in laboratory systems.
• Perform routine equipment maintenance, decontamination, and quality control documentation.
• Explain specimen collection procedures professionally while ensuring patient comfort.
• Maintain compliance with OSHA, HIPAA, and laboratory safety regulations.
• Answer laboratory-related phone inquiries and communicate results when appropriate.
• Float between multiple Patient Service Centers, physician offices, and clinics as business needs require.
• Work independently while maintaining excellent customer service and professionalism.

Required Qualifications

• High School Diploma or GED.
• Minimum 2 years of recent phlebotomy experience .
• Experience performing venipuncture in a fast-paced laboratory, hospital, or patient service center.
• Comfortable performing blood draws on pediatric, adult, and geriatric patients.
• Strong specimen processing experience, including centrifuging, labeling, packaging, and storage.
• Excellent customer service and communication skills.
• Basic proficiency with Microsoft Office.
• Ability to work independently with minimal supervision.
• Reliable personal vehicle required.
• Valid driver's license with a good driving record.
• Ability to travel between multiple laboratory locations.

Preferred Skills

• Experience working in Patient Service Centers (PSC), physician offices, or outpatient clinics.
• Strong customer service skills.
• Experience performing difficult venipunctures ("hard sticks").
• Flexible and adaptable to working at multiple locations.

Training

• Two-day orientation at the Silver Spring, MD Patient Service Center.
• Remainder of the first week of hands-on training at the Linthicum branch before floating independently.

Work Environment

• Floating role supporting multiple outpatient laboratory locations.
• Independent work environment with frequent patient interaction.
• High-volume specimen collection and processing.
• Standing for most of the shift with scheduled meal breaks.

Vaccines Required

• MMR
• Tuberculosis (TB)

• Color Vision Screening Required
