Machine Repair Technician
The Machine Repair Technician mechanically troubleshoots and repairs complex domestic and foreign machine tools and related equipment used for milling, drilling, and grinding cast iron and steel components. This role focuses on installing, maintaining, and restoring the performance of machine tools and associated systems in a heavy machine shop environment, ensuring equipment operates safely, accurately, and reliably to support production demands.
Responsibilities:
- Mechanically troubleshoot and repair complex domestic and foreign machine tools and related equipment that perform milling, drilling, and grinding functions on cast iron and steel components.
- Diagnose and repair a wide variety of machine tools, including Okuma, G&L, Mazak, Lamb grinders, Ingersoll, Toyoda, DMG, and other equipment in the machine shop.
- Service and repair related equipment such as P&H cranes and hoists, conveyors, furnaces, washers, and ABB robots.
- Install, repair, and maintain hydraulic systems, ball screws, precision bearings, and machine controllers used throughout the machine shop.
- Apply scraping principles and other precision techniques to restore and maintain machine accuracy and performance.
- Read and interpret machine tool prints and technical documentation to perform repairs and adjustments to tight tolerances.
- Perform leveling and alignment of machines, including alignment of shafts and gearing, to ensure proper operation and minimal wear.
- Carry out welding, pipefitting, and tube bending tasks as required to support machine repair and maintenance activities.
- Use basic electrical skills to assist in diagnosing and resolving machine-related electrical issues as needed.
- Operate and maintain basic hand tools, mills, lathes, and other shop equipment required to complete machine repairs and fabrication tasks.
- Perform preventive maintenance on machine tools and related equipment to reduce downtime and extend equipment life.
- Fabricate and replace way covers and other machine components to restore protective functions and reliability.
- Conduct mechanical and pneumatic troubleshooting to identify root causes of equipment failures and implement effective corrective actions.
- Work as a self-starter, managing daily tasks and priorities while collaborating effectively within a team environment.
- Support production demands by being willing and able to work overtime when required.
- Participate in training during the initial period on first shift to become proficient with equipment, procedures, and safety practices before transitioning to assigned shift.
Essential Skills:
- Hands-on experience repairing complex machine tools used for milling, drilling, and grinding cast iron and steel components.
- Proven ability to troubleshoot and repair machine tools such as Okuma, G&L, Mazak, Lamb grinders, Ingersoll, Toyoda, DMG, and similar equipment.
- Experience installing, repairing, and maintaining hydraulic systems, including cylinders, valves, and associated components.
- Demonstrated skill in changing ball screws and way covers on machine tools.
- Proficiency working with precision bearings and applying scraping principles to maintain machine accuracy.
- Ability to read and understand machine tool prints and technical drawings, and work accurately with tight tolerances.
- Strong understanding of machine leveling and alignment, including shaft and gear alignment.
- Knowledge of lubrication principles and their application to machine tools and related equipment.
- Experience with pipefitting and tube bending in support of machine repair and maintenance.
- Basic electrical skills sufficient to support machine troubleshooting and repair.
- Ability to operate mills, lathes, and other standard machine shop equipment.
- Proficiency using hand tools and shop tools for mechanical repair and fabrication.
- Mechanical troubleshooting skills covering pneumatics, hydraulics, and general machine repair.
- Demonstrated capability performing preventive maintenance on machine tools and heavy industrial equipment.
- Self-motivated work style with the ability to work independently and within a team.
- Willingness to work overtime to support production requirements.
Additional Skills & Qualifications:
- Experience working with machine tools from manufacturers such as Mazak and WACO.
- Experience in heavy machine shop environments with exposure to cranes, hoists, conveyors, furnaces, washers, and industrial robots.
- Familiarity with ABB robotic systems and their integration with machine tools.
- Comfort working with a variety of domestic and foreign machine tool brands and control systems.
- Ability to perform welding tasks associated with machine repair and fabrication.
- Experience with mechanical, pneumatic, and hydraulic maintenance in an industrial setting.
- Strong attention to detail and commitment to maintaining high standards of equipment reliability and safety.
- Adaptability to different shifts and schedules, including extended hours and weekend work.
- Capacity to learn and apply new repair techniques and technologies during initial training and ongoing development.

Work Environment:
The role is based in a heavy machine shop environment with large industrial equipment, cranes, hoists, conveyors, furnaces, washers, and robotic systems. Work is performed on second shift (3:30 p.m. to 11:30 p.m.), third shift (11:30 p.m. to 7:30 a.m.), and an AWS weekend shift consisting of Friday, Saturday, and Sunday 12-hour shifts, with the option to pick up an additional day during the week to reach 40 hours. During the first 2 to 4 weeks, employees can expect to work approximately 40 hours per week on first shift for training, learning equipment, processes, and safety practices before moving to their assigned shift. Candidates must be open to both second and third shifts, as shift assignment occurs after training. The environment is industrial and physically demanding, with exposure to heavy machinery, noise, and typical machine shop conditions, requiring adherence to appropriate safety practices and attire suitable for a machine shop setting.

Pay and Benefits:
The pay range for this position is $45.00/hr. Eligibility requirements apply to some benefits and may depend on your job classification and length of employment.
