POSITION SUMMARY

Come Near is a lean, fully distributed nonprofit behind the He Gets Us campaign, reaching hundreds of millions of people across the world’s largest media moments. We’re hiring a Senior Full Stack Engineer to own the technical design of our highest-priority initiative: a personalized digital engagement platform.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

• Build and ship full stack features across our web platform, from UI to API to data layer.
• Write production code in Next.js, React, Tailwind CSS, and shadcn/ui, following established architecture and technical standards.
• Implement and maintain caching, CDN, and edge configurations (Cloudflare, Vercel) to support high-traffic events and media moments.
• Work within our AWS environment to deploy, monitor, and troubleshoot services.
• Integrate with data and personalization pipelines, handling personal/sensitive user data according to established privacy and security practices.
• Participate in code review, giving and receiving feedback on quality, performance, and maintainability.
• Collaborate with vendor engineering teams on shared codebases, following the integration contracts and API patterns they've defined.
• Coordinate handoffs and status with distributed team members and vendor engineers across time zones, using async-first documentation.
• Write and maintain tests across unit, integration, and end-to-end layers.
• Troubleshoot production issues, including under load during high-traffic events.
• Document your own work clearly: PRs, runbooks for what you build, and contributions to team design docs.

COMPETENCIES

• Solid full stack fundamentals: comfortable moving between frontend, API, and infrastructure concerns.
• Self-directed enough to take a scoped task and deliver it with minimal hand-holding, async-fluent in a remote environment.
• Clear communicator, in writing and in code, about what you built, why, and what's not done.
• Comfortable receiving direction on architecture and standards from senior engineers while making sound implementation calls day to day.
• Pragmatic: ships working software, flags risk early, doesn't over-engineer.
• Curious and coachable, open to feedback on both code and approach.

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE

• 5+ years of professional software engineering experience building full stack web applications; Bachelor's degree in Computer Science or related field, or equivalent practical experience.
• Strong hands-on experience with Next.js and React; working knowledge of Tailwind CSS and component libraries such as shadcn/ui.
• Practical experience with caching strategies, CDN configuration, and edge platforms (Cloudflare, Vercel, or comparable).
• Working knowledge of AWS services relevant to a modern web stack (e.g., S3, Lambda, RDS, CloudFront).
• Experience writing and maintaining automated tests (unit, integration, and/or end-to-end).
• Comfortable working in a codebase shared with other engineers, including reviewing others' code and having your own reviewed.

BONUS SKILLS

• Experience working alongside external agencies or vendor engineering teams.
• Exposure to analytics or event-tracking pipelines.
• Familiarity with AI/ML-powered product features from an integration or consumption standpoint (not building models).
• Experience with infrastructure-as-code (Terraform or similar).
