Job Opportunity: Ship Superintendent

Location: Norfolk, VA
Schedule: Full-Time | Contract | 40+ hours per week (Overtime and Weekend Work as Required)

About the Role

We are seeking an experienced Ship Superintendent to oversee and coordinate ship repair, modernization, maintenance, and new construction projects in Hampton Roads, VA. This leadership role serves as the primary point of contact between customers, subcontractors, trades personnel, and shipyard management to ensure projects are completed safely, on schedule, within budget, and to the highest quality standards.

Key Responsibilities

• Manage daily shipboard operations and oversee multiple trades performing repair, maintenance, and modernization work.
• Coordinate project schedules, manpower allocation, materials, subcontractors, and work sequencing.
• Serve as the primary liaison between customers, vessel representatives, subcontractors, and shipyard leadership.
• Conduct daily production meetings, safety briefings, and progress reviews.
• Monitor project milestones and ensure work is completed on schedule and within budget.
• Review work packages, specifications, drawings, and contract requirements to ensure project compliance.
• Identify and resolve production challenges, labor shortages, material delays, and technical issues.
• Ensure all work is performed in accordance with NAVSEA, ABS, Coast Guard, customer, and company quality standards.
• Maintain accurate project documentation, daily reports, progress updates, and change order tracking.
• Promote and enforce shipyard safety policies, environmental regulations, and best practices.
• Coordinate inspections, testing, and customer acceptance activities.
• Mentor and develop trade supervisors and production personnel.

Requirements

• Minimum of 5 years of shipyard leadership experience as a Superintendent, General Foreman, Production Manager, or similar role.
• Strong understanding of ship repair, maintenance, modernization, and construction processes.
• Experience managing multiple trades, including welders, pipefitters, electricians, machinists, riggers, and carpenters.
• Ability to read and interpret technical drawings, specifications, work packages, and contracts.
• Strong leadership, organizational, and communication skills.
• Experience coordinating subcontractors and customer representatives.
• Proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite and project reporting tools.
• High school diploma or GED required; associate's or bachelor's degree in a related field preferred.
• Must be willing to undergo background check and drug screening.
• Willingness to work overtime, weekends, and extended schedules as required.
• Clean driving record required.

Work Environment

• Shipyard, waterfront, and industrial environments
• Exposure to noise, heat, cold, heights, confined spaces, and marine/industrial hazards
• Frequent vessel inspections requiring climbing ladders, entering tanks, and traversing shipboard spaces
• PPE required at all times
