Surgical Technologist I/II - Operating Room - Full Time - Shift Job Category : Patient Care Services Requisition Number : SURGI005157 Position : Surgical Technologist I/II - Full Time Compensation The estimated pay for this position is $28.5738 to $46.4142. The rates shown include a 6% premium pay (base= $-$ plus 6%). This reflects only a portion of the total compensation package for this position. Additional compensation may be available for this role through differentials, incentives, and bonuses. In addition, this position may be eligible for participation and company contributions into the Kern County Employees’ Retirement Plan. Job Description Under close or general supervision, the Surgical Technologist I/II is responsible for the handling of required surgical instruments, supplies, and equipment while maintaining sterile technique for all surgical or invasive procedures. DISTINGUISHING CHARACTERISTICS The Surgical Technologist I is an entry level professional. The Surgical Technologist II is an experienced certified professional who can work quickly and efficiently in a fast paced surgical environment. Incumbents are expected to maintain a strong understanding of the procedure being performed and consistently anticipate the needs of the Surgical Team. Essential Functions Assist with transferring patient to the operating room table Identify patient, verify surgery to be performed with consent forms, and assist in the transport of patient to procedural suite when requested Assist with positioning the patient using appropriate equipment and anatomical principles to avoid patient injury Gather, check and open supplies and equipment needed for the surgical/invasive procedure Perform the surgical scrub, and donning gown and gloves with sterile technique Perform initial instrument, sharps and sponge counts with the RN according to the Kern Medical policy and procedure Assist with draping the patient and establishing the sterile field Participate in the surgical site and patient verification during the Time-Out Universal Protocol Secure tubing, cords and other sterile accessories Assist with surgical patient preparedness Prepare and anticipate additional instrumentation, equipment and supplies requirements throughout the procedure Label, measure, pass medications, hemostatic agents and irrigation solutions utilized during the procedure Hold retractors or instruments as directed by the surgical team Sponges or suction the operative site as requested Cut suture material as directed by the surgical team Coordinate the camera or change out robotic arms/instruments during endoscopic surgery as directed by the surgical team Maintain highest standard of sterile technique Assist other members of the team with turnover cleaning of the surgical or procedural suite Assist in patient monitoring to ensure the comfort of the patient and provide verbal and tactile reassurance (when applicable) Assist in maintaining normothermia Assist OR staff as needed within skill set when requested Keep accurate records throughout the procedure Help transport the patient to the post anesthesia care unit Demonstrate clinical knowledge and skill in the care of the newborn, infant, toddler, child, adolescent, adult and geriatric patient population Perform other related duties within skill set when assigned Qualifications High School Diploma or GED required Graduation from an accredited Surgical Technology Training Program (CAAHEP or ABHES) Strong working knowledge of aseptic technique Validation of competencies in all designated surgical sub-specialties Minimum 3+ years of experience in an acute care OR setting Surgical Technician Certification required through the National Board of Surgical Technology and Surgical Assisting. Incumbents designated as a Surgical Technician II at the time of the January 2017 job specification revision may be grandfathered without certification Appointees not possessing the American Heart Association Responder or Provider Basic Life Support (BLS) card at time of hire must successfully complete training and qualify for the RQI Responder certification within 60 days of employment.
