Core Responsibilities Nursing Services Provide direct care to students using professional assessment skills, the nursing process, and established school health protocols in accordance with school policy. Serve as a health advocate for students. Notify parents of accidents or illness and arrange medical care in emergency situations when parents or emergency contacts cannot be reached. Coordinate systems for administering medications at school and ensure medications are given in compliance with school policies and procedures. Establish and implement effective processes for required screening programs and make referrals as needed. Develop, coordinate, and continuously evaluate the campus health program, making improvements based on findings. Consultation Serve as a health liaison among the school, physicians, parents, and the broader community. Act as a key member of the school crisis team and provide health counseling to students, parents, and staff. Assess student health concerns and make appropriate referrals in collaboration with students, teachers, parents, and healthcare professionals as needed. Work with other professionals to implement school-approved, health-related accommodations. Participate in the identification and reporting of suspected child abuse. Conduct home visits, with permission from the Head of School, to address student health needs when necessary. Maintain regular communication with the Head of School, Associate Head of School, Counselor, Assistant to the Head of School, teachers, parents, the lunch caterer, and other team members regarding health services. Create a safe, respectful, and nurturing environment for all students. Communicate information clearly and accurately using effective communication skills. Record all significant parent communication using the school-approved system. Represent the school positively in both internal and external communications. Administration Review and evaluate immunization records. Promote a safe and healthy environment through effective management of school and state immunization and communicable disease programs. Maintain accurate and up-to-date physical and electronic records, including clinic documentation and student health files. Order and manage supplies and equipment to ensure adequate clinic inventory. Comply with all applicable federal and state laws, Texas Department of Health regulations, and school board policies related to health services. Report potential health and safety concerns to the Head of School and adhere to all school procedures and expectations. Support the school’s mission by participating in campus planning, school activities, and staff development, while providing leadership in developing and implementing campus health program goals. Carry out health screening programs in accordance with county and state guidelines and maintain an effective, technology-based system for reporting and recording health data. Assume responsibility for all health-related aspects of field trips, including communicating with parents and preparing any medications that need to be administered to students during the trip. Professional Development Maintain current certification in CPR, vision and hearing screening, and health screening. Keep all nursing credentials up to date in accordance with Texas requirements. Demonstrate professional, ethical, and responsible conduct at all times. Participate in faculty meetings, committees, and school events. Engage in professional development activities to strengthen job-related skills. Stay informed of and adhere to all state, federal, and school policies and regulations for school nurses. Instruction Participate in the development of the campus health education curriculum and deliver health education to individuals and groups throughout the school year, including after-school seminars for parents. Provide health-related education to faculty, staff, and other community members as needed. Offer health counseling and guidance to individual students. Develop health management plans and provide clinical case management for students who are medically fragile or have specialized healthcare needs. Conduct training sessions on specific topics, such as CPR, for faculty, staff, and community members upon request. Miscellaneous Build strong, supportive relationships with students, parents, and colleagues. Consistently supervise and keep track of the students under your responsibility throughout the school day and at school-sponsored events. Participate in school-wide activities and public relations events as needed. Take responsibility for assigned extracurricular activities and oversee approved off-campus events under the direction of the Head of School. Take part in school events throughout the year, including those held during and after the school day, as well as some weekends. Examples: Open Houses, parent meetings, and community-building activities. Welcome and accommodate prospective families. Assist with school-wide initiatives, duties, and special projects as assigned by administration. Share responsibility for the cleanliness and upkeep of the school environment. Other Duties as Assigned Perform other duties as assigned (The school nurse role will occupy most of the school day. However, due to the size of the campus, the nurse will also be expected to take on additional non-nursing responsibilities throughout the school year, including but not limited to front desk coverage, recess supervision, and carpool duty).
