Professional Nurse - Journey Position Summary This position is eligible for a Sign-On Bonus of $2,500 to be paid in two installments: $1,250 within 30 days of your hire date $1,250 12 months after hire date Professional Nurse in the Primary Care area within the Nursing Service Unit is responsible for organizing and providing direct patient care for those patients served by Campus Health in the areas of primary care, prevention and public health; applying clinical expertise in the utilization of the nursing process (assessment, planning, intervention and evaluation); recognizing that the scope and complexity of patient’s conditions vary from primary to chronic and routine to acute; and acts as a liaison between the health care provider and patient to promote optimal patient care. The Professional Nurse also implements educational programs, trainings, guideline interpretation and other advanced clinical skills in the areas of specific disease states (asthma, diabetes, gender-affirming care, eating disorders, sexual assault, sports medicine and orthopedics, emergency management, travel medicine). The Professional Nurse provides nursing assessment, evaluation, education and treatment for these specific disease states and acts as a consultant for other clinical staff. The Professional Nurse assists with complex technical/medical procedures, and assists the nursing supervisor in the orientation, supervision, and evaluation of ancillary nursing personnel. This position provides cross-coverage to other clinical areas within Campus Health and the Mini-Clinic as staffing needs require. License to practice as a Registered Nurse in the State of North Carolina is required. Minimum Education and Experience Requirements License to practice as a Registered Nurse in the State of North Carolina. Management Preferences Graduation from an accredited school of nursing. Experience in an acute/ambulatory care/office-based setting. Demonstrated ability to understand verbal or written instruction to include medical orders by the health care provider, written agency policies and detailed procedures, reference manuals, nursing guidelines, and standards set forth by the Nurse Practice Act of North Carolina. Attention to detail, precision, exactness, and accuracy in applying nursing theory and practice. Ability to share duties and responsibilities and contribute to a team atmosphere to work toward common organizational goals. Special Physical/Mental Requirements Physical effort: Daily physical effort and stamina are required for the delivery of direct and indirect patient care. Examples include transporting, bending, lifting, standing for long periods of time, and monitoring of patient demand throughout the clinics that require extensive walking throughout the workday. Daily Exposure of the Professional Nurse Direct exposure to infectious diseases specific to this age group (i.e., meningitis, mononucleosis, AIDS , Hepatitis, Streptococcal infections, sexually transmitted infections, upper respiratory infections, etc.). Safeguards include utilization of Universal Blood and Body Fluid Precautions, provision of personal protective equipment in all clinical areas and mandatory attendance to an Occupational Safety and Health Exposure Class. Distressing events include exposure to violent, aggressive, and psychotic patients that may lead to potential harm to the nurse. Safeguards include immediate access to campus police and in-house security guards. Injuries can also occur due to the physical effort required for this position. Safeguards include continuing educational activities on proper body mechanics. Visual Attention, Mental Concentration, and Manipulative Skills Visual acuity is essential for the physical assessment and implementation of nursing/medical care daily. Examples may include examining patients, reading medical charts, documentation of physical findings and preparation and administration of medication. Mental concentration is required to document physical assessment findings to ensure that the data collected is thorough and accurate. Manual dexterity is required in the performance of many areas of direct and indirect patient care. These may include placement of an intravenous catheter, application of sterile dressings and administration of medication. Touch is used for diagnostic measures such as the temperature of the skin or detecting the presence of masses.
