Advanced Practice Provider (NP/PA) - Infectious Diseases

The Division of Infectious Diseases, Department of Medicine, Columbia University Irving Medical Center (CUIMC), seeks experienced Adult Nurse Practitioners (NPs) or Physician Assistants (PAs) for a dynamic, multi-dimensional clinical practice. Responsibilities will include:

• Outpatient clinical care for a diverse patient population seeking treatment and prevention services for HIV, sexual health, COVID-19, infection-associated chronic conditions, and pre- and post-transplant care.
• Inpatient consultations and follow-up care on the General Infectious Disease and Transplant Infectious Disease Consult Services.
• A key role in the Intravenous Antibiotic Consultation Service, assisting patients and primary clinical teams with transitions from inpatient to outpatient care and monitoring antimicrobial therapy and outcomes.

The NP/PA will work collaboratively with a vibrant multidisciplinary team of Infectious Diseases and HIV physicians (attendings and fellows) and clinical pharmacists to ensure seamless communication across consult services, Infection Prevention and Control, and the Antibiotic Stewardship Program.

The NP/PA will function both independently and under the supervision of Division faculty, who will provide extensive onboarding, training, and teaching. As a core member of a growing service, the NP/PA will have opportunities for teaching, research collaboration, academic advancement, and leadership development based on individual interests.

The incumbent will be responsible for the comprehensive management of care for an assigned patient population in accordance with mutually agreed-upon protocols and the policies and procedures of the Division of Infectious Diseases and the Department of Medicine at CUIMC.

Responsibilities include:

• Obtain and document interval and/or comprehensive patient histories as appropriate to the chief complaint or reason for visit.
• Perform focused and comprehensive physical examinations, documenting pertinent positive and negative findings.
• Formulate diagnostic impressions and differential diagnoses based on subjective and objective findings.
• Develop and implement goal-directed care plans, including health maintenance, anticipatory guidance, and appropriate clinical interventions in accordance with established protocols and practice agreements.
• Provide and document patient education tailored to clinical conditions, developmental stage, and health maintenance needs; assess and document patient response to treatment.
• Collaborate with multidisciplinary teams to coordinate inpatient care, diagnostic testing, and laboratory data collection; consult and refer as appropriate per collaborative agreements and protocols.
• Serve as a primary liaison between patients, families, and the Infectious Diseases team to ensure continuity and consistency of communication and follow-up care.
• Ensure follow-up of Infectious Diseases recommendations, including laboratory testing, radiologic studies, and microbiology results.
• Educate patients and families regarding antimicrobial therapy, potential side effects, and communicability of infectious diseases.
• Participate in the development and maintenance of programmatic protocols, standing orders, policies, and clinical databases.
• Demonstrate progressive independence in patient evaluation, documentation, and billing, with attending physician oversight as required.
• Identify and pursue ongoing professional development and continuing education goals to maintain clinical competence in accordance with licensure and institutional requirements.
• Participate in quality assurance activities, including peer review, utilization review, competency assessments, and Medical Board reviews.
• Conduct collaborative review of patient records to assess quality, safety, and appropriateness of care provided.
• Perform additional related duties as needed.

Minimum Qualifications include:

• Excellent communication skills and a strong ability to work collaboratively within multidisciplinary teams.
• Strong organizational and administrative skills.

For Nurse Practitioners (NPs)

• Master's degree or higher in Nursing, or an equivalent combination of education and experience, plus one to two years of relevant clinical experience
• Current New York State Nurse Practitioner license (or proof of application)
• Current New York State Registered Nurse license
• National board certification in an appropriate NP specialty
• Eligible BCLS and ACLS certification

For Physician Assistants (PAs)

• Bachelor's degree in Physician Assistant studies or an equivalent combination of education and experience, plus four years of relevant clinical experience
• Master's degree may substitute, in part, for required experience
• Current New York State Physician Assistant license (or proof of application)
• NCCPA certification
• Eligible for BCLS and ACLS certification

Preferred Qualifications include:

• Demonstrated interest in Infectious Diseases and antimicrobial therapy.
• Experience caring for hospitalized medical or surgical patients.
• Proficiency in Spanish in addition to English.

Other Requirements include:

• Must satisfy all clinical credentialing and privileging requirements of NewYork‑Presbyterian Hospital.
• Successful completion of applicable compliance and systems training requirements.
