(Part-Time)
Position Summary:

The Altoona Campus is seeking a knowledgeable, dependable, and enthusiastic Swim Instructor to provide swim instruction during our 2026-2027 swim lesson sessions.

This position will primarily work with babies, toddlers, preschoolers, and young children in our Water Babies, Aqua Tots, and Beginner 1 swim lessons programs. The instructor will be responsible for creating a safe, positive, and encouraging learning environment while helping swimmers develop water confidence, foundational skills, and water safety awareness.

The ideal candidate is patient, attentive, comfortable working with young children, and able to communicate effectively with both children and parents or caregivers. Experience working with young children or teaching swim lessons is preferred , including experience in childcare, education, coaching, or a related setting.
Session Dates & Schedule:

The Swim Instructor will work Monday and Wednesday evenings during each session. Instructors are expected to arrive 15 minutes before the start of instruction to prepare for class and be ready to begin on time.
Fall Session

Dates: September 21 - October 21 on Monday & Wednesday evenings

Work hours: 4:30-7:30 PM

Instruction: Water Babies & Aqua Tots through 6:00 PM; Beginner 1 from 6:00-7:30 PM
Winter Session

Dates: January 11 - February 12 on Monday & Wednesday evenings

Work hours: 3:45-7:30 PM

Instruction: Water Babies & Aqua Tots through 6:00 PM; Beginner 1 from 6:00-7:30 PM
Spring Session

Dates: March 22 - April 21 on Monday & Wednesday evenings

Work hours: 3:45-7:30 PM

Class Schedule

Water Babies & Aqua Tots

Water Babies and Aqua Tots instruction will take place from the beginning of the evening schedule through 6:00 PM . These programs serve babies, toddlers, and their caregivers and focus on water comfort, safety, introductory skills, and positive early experiences in the water.

Beginner 1 (B1)

Beginner 1 typically serves children ages 3-6 and focuses on foundational swimming skills, water safety, confidence, and progression through the established curriculum. You will be teaching 3 Beginner 1 classes from 6:00pm-7:30pm.
Required Qualifications:

• Must be at least 16 years of age
• Comfortable in the water and able to demonstrate basic swim strokes and water safety skills
• Able to work independently and as part of a team
• Reliable transportation
• Positive attitude and strong sense of responsibility
• Ability to communicate professionally with children, parents/guardians, and fellow staff
• Ability to follow established curriculum, policies, and safety procedures

Preferred Qualifications

• Previous experience teaching swim lessons
• Experience working with babies, toddlers, preschoolers, or young children
• Experience in childcare, education, coaching, or a related field
• Knowledge of age-appropriate instruction and child development
• Current lifeguard, CPR, First Aid, or other relevant certifications

Essential Duties & Responsibilities

• Teach swim lessons according to established curriculum and safety guidelines
• Provide age-appropriate instruction for babies, toddlers, preschoolers, and beginning swimmers
• Modify instruction to meet individual participant needs and skill levels
• Maintain constant visual supervision of all participants
• Enforce pool rules and contribute to a safe aquatic environment
• Help swimmers develop water confidence, foundational swimming skills, and water safety awareness
• Establish positive and professional relationships with swimmers and their parents or caregivers
• Provide clear, encouraging communication and feedback regarding student progress
• Complete attendance tracking and basic lesson documentation
• Assist with setup and cleanup of equipment before and after lessons
• Respond appropriately and confidently in emergency situations
• Attend required staff meetings and training sessions
• Arrive 15 minutes prior to scheduled instruction and be prepared to begin lessons on time
• Represent the Altoona Campus in a professional and positive manner

Physical Requirements

• Ability to stand for extended periods of time
• Ability to lift up to 30 pounds
• Ability to demonstrate swim strokes and water safety skills
• Ability to work in a warm, humid pool environment
• Ability to enter and exit the pool repeatedly
• Ability to respond quickly and appropriately in emergency situations

Training & Professional Support

Instructors will receive the training and resources necessary to provide safe, effective, and age-appropriate swim instruction.

Training will include:

• Orientation to Altoona Campus aquatic policies, procedures, and safety expectations
• Training on the swim lesson curriculum and class structure
• Guidance on age-appropriate instruction and working with young swimmers
• Review of emergency procedures and water safety protocols
• Opportunities to ask questions and receive feedback from experienced aquatic staff
• Ongoing support and communication throughout each swim session

Compensation & Benefits

• Starting pay: $16.00/hour
