Elevator , Amusement Safety Inspector

About Us The North Carolina Department of Labor (NCDOL) promotes the health, safety, and general well‑being of workers in the state. NCDOL enforces regulatory, enforcement, and promotional programs to protect workers and maintain safe working environments. Description of Work Elevator Inspector enforces state and national safety codes for elevators, escalators, personnel hoists, amusement devices, tramway devices, and related passenger‑carrying equipment. The role includes condemnation authority for unsafe equipment and investigation of accidents involving unsafe equipment or operations. Work is performed under general supervision of the Elevator and Amusement Device Inspector Supervisor and reviewed through weekly reports, inspection observations, and periodic conferences. Key inspection activities include: Conducting final field inspections and issuing certificates before equipment is used for passenger conveyance. Performing periodic re‑inspections to ensure continued compliance. Inspecting passenger and freight elevators, wind turbine elevators, escalators, aerial passenger tramways, amusement devices, special equipment, and workmen's hoists. Examining elevator hoist‑ways, passenger cars, machinery, moving parts, cables, safety devices, auxiliary power sources, electrical wiring, and hydraulic systems. Witnessing loading tests to confirm equipment operates within design parameters. Observing operators for safe operating procedures and requiring replacement of incompetent or negligent employees when necessary. Examining blueprints and drawings to verify compliance with construction and maintenance standards. Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities / Management Preferences Applicants must demonstrate: Accurate and precise inspection skills for complex systems. Working knowledge of elevator, escalator, and related equipment construction and operation. In-depth knowledge of applicable state and national safety codes and amusement devices. Understanding of electrical and hydraulic systems. Basic computer and word processing skills. The job is field‑based and may involve telework. Applicants must reside in Mecklenburg County or surrounding counties or be willing to relocate within 30 days of hire. Valid driver’s license required. Main Physical Requirements of Position Maintain high visual attention and mental concentration during inspections. Work in extreme weather conditions, both outdoors and indoors, including high heat, humidity, cold, and rain. Move objects weighing up to 50 lbs and walk long distances on uneven surfaces in extreme weather. Work in restricted spaces such as elevator pits, ascending/descending ladders or steps. Perform tasks that may require 50–100% daily activity levels (non‑stationary positions). Position self for inspections, including bending, crawling, stooping, standing, lifting, and walking. Operate in potentially noisy environments. Certification and Licensing The position requires certification as a Qualified or Certified Elevator Inspector (QEI) in accordance with ASME QEI‑1 and accredited by ISO/IEC 17024 through the ANSI National Accreditation Board. If not already certified, the incumbent will receive training, study time, and two opportunities to take the QEI examination, fully reimbursed by NCDOL. Failure to pass after two attempts will result in separation from the agency. All Elevator Inspectors must maintain continuous QEI certification throughout employment. Minimum Education and Experience Applicants must have a high school diploma or GED and a minimum of four years of experience in the construction, inspection, erection, or servicing of elevators and related equipment, or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
