Community Engagement Coordinator

ROLES AND RESPONSIBILITIES Community Engagement and Organizing (60%) Be a thought partner for the Director of Programs to design and implement engagement and outreach strategies that align with Mayan League values, priorities and support community‑centered initiatives as we walk alongside Maya Peoples and communities towards systemic change. Represent the Mayan League at in‑person and virtual community events, meetings, outreach activities, and external engagements by clearly presenting information about the organization’s programs and maintaining positive, professional relationships with community members. Co‑lead community engagement events—both in‑person and virtual—that honor Indigenous protocols while managing logistics (including timelines, scheduling, checklists, venue coordination, material preparation, vendor bookings, registration processes, and follow‑up communication). Through deep listening to community needs in the field, support the mapping of community aspirations, strengths, and ecosystem gaps that will support the Maya Network. Through engaging in reciprocal dialogue with community members, assess and connect aspiring candidates to the Maya Leadership Academy contributing to the creation of new educational opportunities. Cultivate deep and long‑term relationships by supporting mentoring efforts for current and emerging Maya Interpreters and leaders. Provide needed support at community events such as food distributions or coalition meetings. While maintaining prioritization on role duties and workload balance, step in to support teammates during organization‑wide projects that require all‑hands collaboration. Program Administration (30%) Monitor, review, and promptly respond to Mayan languages interpretation requests to ensure all requests are addressed effectively; manage interpretation assignments and serve as the primary point of contact for questions or issues related to interpretation requests. Coordinate with necessary staff to ensure the smooth operation of the Language Rights Program. Fundraising (10%) Collaborate with the development team on fundraising initiatives to secure funding and stakeholder support by assisting with grant applications, community engagement, fundraising campaigns, and events. Contribute to marketing and communication efforts for community initiatives, including social media engagement, email marketing, and storytelling. MANAGER RESPONSIBILITIES No supervisory requirements. Depending on experience and desire, you may have the opportunity to supervise interns and/or volunteers REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS, KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES High School diploma or equivalent required Minimum 2 years in community organizing or mobilizing experience supporting community-centered program activities At least 1 year of experience in community outreach and engagement with Indigenous Peoples Minimum 1 year of administrative experience supporting community-centered program activities Demonstrated capacity to be an empathetic bridge‑builder and strategic relationships networker Bilingual proficiency in Spanish and English Experience working with community and movement organizations, ideally those focused on Indigenous Peoples’ human rights work Understanding of issues specifically affecting Indigenous Peoples and immigrant communities Actively practice cultural humility, willingness for constant self reflection and growth Strong interpersonal, oral communication, and public speaking skills to diverse audiences Organized and able to manage multiple tasks and follow‑up in a fast‑paced environment Ability to work independently, anticipate and plan for needs with minimal supervision Ability to work respectfully with diverse populations and teams, and navigate conflict across lines of differences. Strong computer skills, including Microsoft Office, Google Workspace, and communication platforms including email, Google Chat/Meet, WhatsApp, SIGNAL, Zoom Availability to work on evenings and weekends as driven by community events. PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS Associate or Bachelor’s degree in community development, non‑profit management, public administration, or related field Conversational fluency in one or more Mayan Languages we serve (Maya Mam, K’iche’, Ixil, Q'anjob'al, Q’eqchi, Kaqchikel, or any other of the 22 Mayan languages) Experience or familiarity with Indigenous Peoples’ rights, including those of Indigenous women, as well as human rights, environmental protection, environmental justice, climate justice, and social justice Previous experience managing programs in non‑profit or community‑based organizations Knowledge of community resources and service provider networks throughout the United States Previous experience working with contractors and subcontracting agencies CLASSIFICATION Non‑exempt (hourly) Full‑time - 35 hours per week COMPENSATION AND BENEFITS Compensation commensurate with experience, ranging from $22 to $25 per hour. Benefits include the employer's contribution of 100% of the premium for medical insurance, 99% employer contribution to dental and vision insurance, two weeks of paid vacation, paid sick leave, and federal holidays. Our office is closed one week in the summer and the last week of the year to allow our team to restore and recharge. Remote office contribution of $50 per month for cell phone and $30 internet service stipend. We provide an annual professional development stipend to support continued learning, skill-building, and career growth.
