Physician (Sleep Medicine)

Summary This position is eligible for the Education Debt Reduction Program (EDRP) – a student‑loan payment reimbursement program. Applicants must meet specific VHA policy eligibility requirements and submit their EDRP application within four months of appointment. Program approval, including award amount (up to $200,000) and eligibility period (one to five years), is determined by the VHA Education Loan Repayment Services office after review of the application. Former EDRP participants are ineligible to apply. Qualifications To qualify for this position, applicants must meet the basic requirements and any additional requirements listed in the announcement. Applicants pending completion of training or license requirements may be referred and tentatively selected but can be hired only after all requirements are met. Currently employed physicians in VA who met the prior qualification standard at the time of their initial appointment are deemed to have met the basic requirements of the occupation. Basic Requirements United States citizenship. Non‑citizens may be appointed only when it is not possible to recruit qualified citizens in accordance with VA Policy. Doctor of Medicine or equivalent medical degree in allopathic or osteopathic medicine from an approved VA school. Full and unrestricted license to practice medicine or surgery in a U.S. state, territory, Commonwealth, or the District of Columbia. Residency training approved by the Secretary of Veterans Affairs in an accredited core specialty program leading to board certification; or one of the alternate training pathways described below. Preferred: Board certified in the relevant specialty. Reference: Physical requirements: VA Handbook 5019/1 – Part II – Pre‑Placement Physical Examination and Evaluation. Proficiency in spoken and written English. Alternate Residency Training Pathways Approved residency: ACGME or AOA accredited core specialty training program published for the year of completion. One year of post‑medical‑school training (internship, first year of residency, or transitional year) approved by ACGME or AOA, followed by two years of independent practice under a full license in the U.S. Non‑U.S. residency followed by at least three years of verified independent practice in the U.S. under a full license, with duties related to the position. Residents in accredited programs who meet the basic requirements may be appointed as Physician Resident Providers (PRPs). PRPs must be fully licensed physicians, appointed intermittently, and perform duties under supervision. In rare circumstances, the Facility Director may submit a memo to the VISN Director for approval of exceptions to the residency requirement. Staff Sleep Physician responsibilities at the PVAHCS Medical Center: clinical services five days a week, including patient examinations, education, result communication, and triage; all documentation in the Computer Patient Record System (CPRS). Patient population includes all sleep‑related conditions and diseases. Board certification or eligibility in sleep medicine required; credentialing and privileging at the Phoenix VA Health Care System required. Normal work hours: Monday through Friday, 7:00 am to 4:00 pm. Weekend coverage and on‑call may be required on a rotating basis. Clinical duties: conduct sleep clinic examinations, establish diagnoses, interpret sleep function tests and relevant pulmonary tests, perform inpatient and outpatient sleep consultations, and perform sleep‑related procedures and interpretations. Sleep study interpretation: if certified, interpret sleep studies, overnight oximetry, and related methodologies.
