Java Software Engineer (United States)

SUMMARY:

Tucker-Reeves Associates is seeking a mid-level level Java Developer to help support a Program with the US Department of Veterans Affairs. We are partnered with Booz Allen on this position and will allow remote work. All work must be performed in the United States. This position is limited to U.S. citizens and U.S. lawful permanent residents (Green Card holders). Employer-sponsored work authorization, including H-1B sponsorship, is not available for this position.

RESPONSIBILITIES:

The Inbound eRX team supports mission-critical capabilities for the Department of Veterans Affairs within the Patient Care product line. As a Developer, mid (Java), you will help deliver secure, reliable, and maintainable solutions across the full software lifecycle. You will work with cross-functional teams and stakeholders to translate mission needs into measurable outcomes, manage technical and delivery risks, and support high-quality releases.

Key Responsibilities

• Design, develop, and test Java application software and integrations throughout the SDLC.
• Translate requirements into maintainable code, automated tests, data validation, logging, and secure error handling.
• Participate in code reviews, defect resolution, documentation, CI/CD, and production support.
• Collaborate with analysts, architects, testers, DevSecOps engineers, and product owners to deliver working software.
• Identify technical risks and recommend pragmatic improvements to reliability, performance, and maintainability.

REQUIREMENTS:

• Bachelor's Degree in computer science, electronics engineering or other engineering or technical discipline is required, or 8 years of additional relevant experience may be substituted for education
• 5 years' of professional software development experience in the primary technology named in this JD or a closely related stack.
• Experience with APIs or integrations, automated testing, source control, code review, and CI/CD.
• Strong debugging, documentation, secure coding, and SDLC practices.
• Experience with healthcare, pharmacy, medication-management, e-prescribing, or other clinical application workflows is preferred.
• Experience supporting Department of Veterans Affairs, federal health IT, or other regulated healthcare programs.
• Experience with Jira, Confluence, Git, Microsoft 365, and collaborative Agile delivery tools.
• Experience with VistA patch development and release processes, InterSystems IRIS, MUMPS, or VA Pharmacy applications.
• Clear written and verbal communication with technical and nontechnical stakeholders.
• Strong ownership, attention to detail, and ability to work independently while collaborating in a distributed team.
• Commitment to secure, accessible, testable, and supportable products.
• Ability to obtain and maintain government credentials, including a PIV where applicable.
• Ability to obtain and maintain a Public Trust or Suitability/Fitness determination.
