Captain

Summary The Captain is ultimately responsible for all aspects of safe vessel operations. This includes, but is not limited to, navigation, boat handling, managing, and training mates and crewmembers. Captains communicate with the operations and maintenance departments, and ticket offices, to resolve any unusual issues that arise during daily operations. Responsibilities Operate vessels in accordance with all applicable rules and regulations. Develop in depth knowledge of all routes you will travel while operating Hy‑Line’s vessels. Understand how to operate all navigation equipment aboard your designated vessel/s. Develop in depth knowledge of all mechanical systems onboard your vessel/s, including engine room and jet room (if appropriate) equipment, generators, pumps, water systems, wastewater. Understand your vessel’s Certificate of Inspection and its corresponding manning requirements, vessel passenger capacity, safety equipment requirements, and approved routes. Supervise safe, proper, and efficient loading and off-loading of passengers, luggage, freight, and bikes. Prioritize safe operation of vessel while underway, and at Hy‑Line’s associated shoreside facilities. Provide excellent customer service to Hy‑Line’s passengers. Assist mates and crewmembers with their customer service duties. Direct mate and crew in all required safety and security, education, and drills; which includes but is not limited to: man overboard, fire, abandon ship, security, first aid, and active shooter response. Licenses, Registrations, and/or Certifications Minimum US Coast Guard 100 ton Captain’s License. Required Education and Experience Must be a minimum of 18 years of age. High School diploma or equivalent. Requires twin screw or jet propulsion boat handling experience. Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities Committed work ethic in an ever‑changing, fast‑paced environment, a positive demeanor and great customer service skills, a responsible team member who works well with others and is self‑motivated. Must be able to walk up and down up to 3 flights of stairs, climb up and down ladders up to 10 feet, get safely in and out of engine room and lift 40 pounds. Must be able to safely perform the essential duties for the position, with or without, reasonable accommodation.
