Startup Engineer / Arctic Field Start-Up Engineer (Rotational)

Location: North Slope, Alaska (Field-Based)
Position Type: Contractor, Rotational Schedule (Typically 3 weeks on / 3 weeks off; 12-hour shifts)

Position Summary

Our client is seeking a qualified Start-Up Engineer to provide critical field engineering and commissioning support for operations, maintenance, design, and construction teams on the Alaska North Slope. This role acts as a primary technical bridge, guiding projects smoothly from the pre-Issue for Approval (IFA) stage, through the construction phase, and into successful post-construction asset handoff. The ideal candidate thrives in dynamic, harsh environments and possesses strong on-site coordination and interdisciplinary communication skills.

 

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

• Field Coordination: Act as the primary on-site technical liaison between the Anchorage-based engineering facility group and North Slope construction, operations, and maintenance personnel.
• Project Progress: Interface daily with Project Leads, Supervisors, Superintendents, and Facility Engineers to proactively resolve field discrepancies and maintain aggressive execution schedules.
• Pre-Commissioning & Commissioning: Review multi-discipline design packages (mechanical, piping, electrical, and structural) to verify field readiness, ensuring physical builds match engineering intent before plant startup.
• System Testing & Validation: Support, direct, and document pre-commissioning system walkthroughs, leak tests, loop checks, and functional asset integrations.
• Technical Issue Resolution: Manage and process Requests for Information (RFIs), troubleshoot real-time field changes, and redline drawings to reflect accurate as-built conditions.
• Safety & Regulatory Compliance: Adhere rigidly to arctic safety protocols and ensure all startup activities strictly align with environmental regulations, safety policies, and design codes.

 

Required Qualifications & Experience

• Education: Bachelor of Science (BS) degree in an ABET-accredited engineering discipline (Mechanical, Chemical/Process, or Electrical preferred).
• Experience: Minimum of two (2) to four (4) years of direct engineering or operations support experience in the oil and gas sector.
• Regional Knowledge: Previous experience working in Arctic or remote industrial field conditions is highly preferred.
• Technical Literacy: Proven ability to accurately read and interpret Piping and Instrumentation Diagrams (P&IDs), electrical one-lines, wiring schematics, and structural engineering packages.
• Communication: Exceptional verbal and written technical reporting skills, with the ability to maintain strong working relationships under tight operational deadlines.
• Software: Competency in Microsoft Office Suite (Excel, Word, Outlook) and exposure to computer-assisted design or engineering simulation tools.

 

Working Conditions & Physical Demands

• This is a remote, camp-based assignment on the Alaska North Slope.
• Must be comfortable working consecutive 12-hour shifts in a cold, physically demanding, and safety-focused outdoor environment.
• Employment is contingent upon successfully passing a standard pre-employment background check, drug screening.
