Recoveries Investigator

This is a Full‑Time 40‑hour weekly position in the Department of Social Services (DSS). The role is located in Pierre, South Dakota, and offers an hourly wage starting at $23.56 depending on qualifications. Job Summary The Office of Recoveries & Fraud Investigations (ORFI) identifies situations where social services benefit programs were obtained inappropriately and seeks recovery when the state is owed money if benefits were overpaid due to error, fraud, or other reasons. The Recoveries Investigator investigates cases to ensure recipients utilize benefits appropriately according to federal and state regulations. Responsibilities Investigate cases related to overpayments, fraud, or misuse of social services benefits. Establish, build, and maintain cooperative relationships with internal and external stakeholders. Gather, analyze, and interpret data to prepare formal case action plans, reports, and documentation. Use investigative techniques and principles to collect evidence and pursue recoveries. Obtain information from reluctant or non-communicative individuals. Plan, organize, and prioritize work activities to meet schedules and deadlines. Review, interpret, and apply relevant regulations and policies. Utilize computerized data systems to manage investigations. Work independently with minimal supervision. Ideal Candidate Education and Experience Degree and/or work experience in a relevant field such as public administration, human services, public health, finance, health care administration, or a related field. Knowledge Programs within the Department of Social Services, including Temporary Assistance to Needy Families, SNAP, Child Care, Energy Assistance, and Child Support. Investigative techniques and principles (preferred but not required). Preparing formal case action plans and reports. Information management. Abilities Build and maintain productive relationships internally and externally. Gather data, reason logically, solve problems using common sense and resourcefulness. Actively listen, elicit needed information, and provide concise verbal and written communication. Prepare clear and concise documentation, reports, and correspondence. Effectively plan, organize, and prioritize work activities. Read, interpret, and apply pertinent regulations. Utilize computerized data systems. Work independently with minimal supervision.
