Molecular Laboratory Supervisor

Supervises, directs, plans, develops, implements, evaluates and oversees the execution of daily operations of the high complexity testing in a molecular diagnostic laboratory. Responsible for setting up and overseeing Molecular/Genomic lab testing to deliver high quality, efficient and timely laboratory services. Responsible for employee training and development, preparation and supervision of validation protocols and procedures, and completion of validation reports and monitoring and maintaining inventory.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES

Under managerial direction, this position is responsible for complex laboratory procedures and has authority over testing personnel. Responsible for the day-to-day supervision or oversight of the laboratory operation and personnel performing testing and reporting test results. Lead molecular/genomic testing start up and development projects and assist the lab management team in building high quality molecular/genomic testing services. Lead development and validations of molecular assays. Lead and guide medical technologists, lab assistants and other lab staff. Collaborate with lab management to maintain staffing and productivity monitors. Prepare/process specimens and operate molecular testing equipment/analyzers to report molecular laboratory results. Calibrate, standardize, adjust and maintain molecular/genomic laboratory equipment. Develop, write and/or modify policies and procedures for molecular/genomic testing. Perform and manage proficiency testing program for molecular/genomic testing. Perform all Quality Control and Quality Assurance procedures, including managing logs/files and recording of data. Review, evaluate, and document all problems and corrective action reports in accordance with established policies and procedures. Perform routine and/or preventive maintenance on molecular laboratory equipment. Troubleshoot basic molecular instrumentation, reagents, technical problems and methodologies. Provide resolution of technical problems in accordance with policies and procedures established by the Laboratory Director. Perform in-service training programs, as needed. Manage and assist in all bench training in the molecular laboratory. The supervisor of high-complexity testing must be accessible to the laboratory as needed for on-site, telephone, or electronic consultation. Ensure that remedial actions are taken when test systems deviate from the laboratory's established performance specifications. Provide orientation of testing personnel. Maintains medical laboratory equipment performance by establishing quality standards; developing operations, quality, and troubleshooting procedures; ensuring staff compliance; certifying instrument performance; arranging equipment replacement, service, and repair. Maintains medical laboratory supplies inventory by checking stock to determine inventory level; anticipating needed supplies; placing and expediting orders for supplies; verifying receipt of supplies. Maintains medical laboratory information system by identifying information needs and problems; recommending improvements; establishing priorities; testing; writing user manuals; training employees; maintaining security and confidentiality. Facilitates the implementation of new programs, tests, methods, instrumentation, and procedures by investigating alternatives; preparing proposals; developing and performing parallel testing; monitoring progress in accordance with management direction. Completes operational requirements by scheduling and assigning employees; following up on work results. Complies with state and professional continuing education requirements. Adheres to all Infection Control, Environment of Care and Safety procedures including but not limited to appropriate use of Personal Protective Equipment (PPE). Perform other duties as assigned. Previous supervisory experience in molecular biology/infectious disease testing is strongly preferred Other Duties Participates in Service Improvement projects. Performs other duties as requested. Minimum Education/Certifications Bachelor of Science degree in Medical Technology, Molecular Biology, Chemical, Physical, Biological science or other or related field with MT (ASCP) or MB(ASCP) certification required. Master’s degree preferred in Molecular Biology or related field preferred. Meet CLIA requirements for testing personnel of molecular/genomic testing. Minimum 4 years laboratory experience (one of which is in molecular diagnostic testing) Technical insight and have hands-on experience with PCR techniques and DNA/RNA isolation methods. Proven experience in clinical molecular assay design, validation, and implementation in accordance with regulatory requirements. Extensive experience in complex diagnostic molecular testing techniques, including hands-on experience with Next-Generation Sequencing and PCR assays. Experience with bioinformatics tools desirable. Ability to solve complex problems independently and as part of a team. MUST be detail oriented and possess strong organizational skills. Proficiency in Microsoft Office applications (Word, Excel and Outlook). Excellent communication skills, verbal and written. Critical thinking with efficient and effective problem-solving skills. Ability to manage and execute multiple projects, prioritize, and meet deadlines. Strong interpersonal skills and professional demeanor.
