Bus Mechanic
Reports to: Shop Foreman & Director of Transportation
Wage / Hour Status: Non-exempt
Length of Contract: 249
Salary: $41,239.96 - $46,239.96 plus benefits
Maintenance & Transportation Salary Schedule, Range 10
Primary Purpose: The bus mechanic must ensure the district's bus fleet is in a state of operating excellence, such that it presents no problems or interruptions to the educational program. They must be knowledgeable of how to use computer diagnostics and make repairs to vehicles accordingly.
Qualifications
Education / Certification:
- High school diploma or equivalent
- Training or coursework in gasoline and diesel powered motorized equipment repair, overhaul, and maintenance
- Valid Commercial Drivers License (CDL) with Passenger and School Bus endorsements
Special Knowledge / Skills:
- Strong knowledge of computer diagnostics for diesel engines
- Strong knowledge of the DEF components
- Knowledge of AC systems and their components
Preferred Experience: At least 3 years
Major Responsibilities and Duties
Bus Fleet and School District Vehicle Reparations:
- Overhaul and service assemblies and accessories, such as drivetrain components, hydraulics, anti-lock braking systems, suspension, steering systems, and engine components
- Identify vehicle repair needs using both computerized diagnostic equipment as well as original equipment manuals and diagnostic materials
- Diagnose, repair and replace electrical/electronic lighting systems, control systems, transmission, starting and charging systems.
- Inspect vehicles and conduct test drives to ensure safety and roadworthiness and to address concerns regarding defects or non-conformance with Arkansas Department of Education and/or DOT regulatory standards.
- Complete routine and preventative maintenance
Maintaining Shop Area and Inventory:
- Maintains a high level of safety standards at all times while performing the responsibilities of the position
- Maintains work area in a safe, clean, and orderly condition; maintains equipment and tools in a safe and proper working condition; notifies appropriate personnel of unsafe working conditions
- Responsible for inventories of assigned tools and equipment.
- Completes work orders and maintains records of time worked and materials used
Bus Driving:
- Perform emergency road service to disabled buses. Drive replacement bus to site and call for wrecker service, when needed
- Drive scheduled bus routes or trips when required
- Assist with checking road conditions during inclement weather, inspects for road hazards, and other safety related conditions as required by the mechanic supervisor and/or director of transportation
Ability to:
- Maintain effective working relationships; demonstrate a commitment to teamwork
- Learn and properly utilize various machines/equipment, especially when upgraded
- Learn and upgrade job skills in order to meet changing demands of the position
- Balance multiple demands at one time, work with frequent interruptions
- Work independently with minimum supervision
- Use independent judgment
- Demonstrate initiative to act or ask for help when needed on tasks
- Operate a variety of equipment utilized in repair and maintenance
- Operate a computer and software products including software unique to the position
- Diagnose and locate mechanical and electrical malfunctions and defects
- Perform skilled gasoline and diesel repair, overhaul, and maintenance functions
- Apply safe working methods and procedures
