About the Role We’re seeking a strategic, detail oriented Controller to lead the Accounting function for a fast paced food import company generating $200M in annual revenue. This role oversees all financial operations, including cash flow management, reporting, compliance, payroll, audits, and internal controls, while ensuring accuracy and alignment with GAAP/IFRS standards. The ideal candidate brings 7 to 10 years of progressive accounting experience, including at least 3 years in a Controller or senior finance role, along with industry experience in food import, distribution, or international supply chain environments. This is not a traditional accounting role and requires a strong understanding of landed cost, including freight, import fees, and accrual based costing, and how it impacts margins and cash flow. Success in this role requires strong leadership and the ability to translate complex financial data into insights that support operational decisions and long term growth. Key Responsibilities Maintain a documented system of accounting policies and procedures; implement effective internal controls over accounting transactions to minimize financial and operational risk. Manage daily cash flow and financial projections to ensure adequate liquidity for ongoing operations. Monitor and maintain loan balances, ensuring full compliance with all bank covenant requirements; initiate loan paydowns as needed. Review and approve all wire transfers and ACH transactions. Oversee all accounts and ledgers; ensure the accurate and timely analysis of financial data. Produce and review periodic financial reports in accordance with Generally Accepted Accounting Principles (GAAP) or International Financial Reporting Standards (IFRS). Submit monthly financial statements and other required documentation to banking institutions. Coordinate all audit activities with internal departments and external auditors, including those representing banks and regulatory agencies; ensure accuracy of financial reporting. Reconcile balance sheet accounts and perform detailed analysis of income statement results. Ensure timely and accurate payment of income taxes across applicable sectors and jurisdictions. Maintain and transmit payroll; manage onboarding for new hires, including benefits enrollment. Recommend and monitor performance benchmarks to support company-wide financial and strategic goals. Develop annual budgets and forecasts; identify and report significant variances to management. Provide strategic financial analysis in support of capital investments, pricing models, and contract negotiations. Prepare compliance certificates and ensure full adherence to local, state, and federal regulatory requirements. Validate and approve vendor and supplier payments to ensure accuracy. Perform other related duties and special projects as assigned. Oversee the operations of the Accounting Department, which include accounts payable, accounts receivable, bank reconciliations, and payroll. Oversee training programs and identifies training needs. Requirements Bachelor's degree in accounting, Finance, or related field required; CPA or CMA preferred. Minimum 7–10 years of progressive accounting experience, with at least 3 years in a Controller or senior finance role. Industry experience in food import, distribution, or international supply chain strongly preferred. Software Skills: Proficiency in logistics software and Microsoft Office, particularly Excel; experience with Oracle Netsuite is a plus. Communication Skills: Excellent written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to work effectively. Attention to Detail: Strong organizational skills and attention to detail to ensure accuracy in documentation and data management.
