Position Summary

Morgan Contractors is seeking a dependable, hands-on Field Mechanic to support our railroad ramp, rail yard, and industrial maintenance operations in the Louisville, KY area and surrounding project locations.

This is not a standard shop mechanic role. The right person for this position is comfortable working in the field, troubleshooting equipment issues on active job sites, and helping keep operations moving in demanding rail, logistics, and industrial environments. This role requires strong mechanical ability, experience with hydraulics, welding, torch work, and a willingness to travel and work long hours when the job requires it.

The ideal candidate is mechanically skilled, safety-minded, reliable under pressure, and willing to jump in wherever needed to support crews, equipment, and customer operations.

Key Responsibilities

• Diagnose, troubleshoot, repair, and maintain equipment used in railroad ramp, rail yard, industrial, and facility maintenance operations.
• Perform mechanical repairs in both shop and field environments.
• Work on hydraulic systems, pumps, hoses, fittings, cylinders, and related components.
• Perform welding, cutting, torch work, fabrication, and field repairs as needed.
• Inspect equipment and identify repair needs before they create downtime or safety concerns.
• Support rail yard and ramp operations by keeping equipment safe, functional, and job-ready.
• Travel to project sites as needed, including overnight travel.
• Work long days, nights, weekends, and emergency callouts when project demands require it.
• Maintain tools, trucks, equipment, and work areas in a clean and organized manner.
• Follow all company safety policies, site-specific safety rules, and customer requirements.
• Communicate clearly with supervisors, crews, and operations leadership regarding repair status, parts needs, and equipment concerns.
• Assist with general field support when mechanical work is complete or when crews need additional help.
• Represent Morgan Contractors professionally on customer sites, rail yards, and active logistics facilities.

What We’re Looking For

• Strong mechanical background with hands-on repair experience.
• Experience with hydraulics is strongly preferred.
• Welding, torch cutting, fabrication, or metal repair experience is strongly preferred.
• Experience working on construction equipment, industrial equipment, trailers, trucks, rail yard equipment, or similar machinery.
• Ability to troubleshoot problems in the field without needing perfect shop conditions.
• Comfortable working outdoors and in active industrial, rail, or logistics environments.
• Willingness to travel and work non-traditional hours, including nights and long shifts.
• Ability to work safely around moving equipment, vehicles, crews, and customer operations.
• Dependable, self-motivated, and able to work with limited supervision.
• Strong communication skills and a team-first attitude.
• Valid driver’s license required.
• Ability to pass required background checks, drug screening, or site access requirements as applicable.

Preferred Experience

• Railroad ramp, rail yard, intermodal, logistics, or industrial maintenance experience.
• Mobile mechanic or field service mechanic experience.
• Experience repairing hydraulic equipment in the field.
• CDL, equipment operation experience, OSHA training, welding certifications, or similar credentials are a plus but not required.

Physical & Work Environment Requirements

This role requires the ability to work in real field conditions. Candidates must be able to:

• Work outdoors in varying weather conditions.
• Stand, walk, bend, kneel, climb, lift, and perform physically demanding work.
• Lift and carry tools, parts, and materials as needed.
• Work around active equipment, trucks, trailers, rail yard traffic, and industrial operations.
• Work extended hours when required by project schedules or emergency repair needs.
• Travel to different job sites, including overnight stays.
