Utility QC Inspector
$32 - $45 per hourPosition Overview
A leading utility company is expanding its gas infrastructure programs and requires additional Quality Control (QC) Inspectors to oversee contractor construction activities and ensure compliance with company, industry, and regulatory standards. This role is responsible for protecting the integrity and safety of the gas distribution network through field inspections, quality assessments, safety audits, and contractor performance tracking.
The QC Inspector works closely with a lead inspector to plan daily inspection routes and priorities. While the lead inspector primarily manages communication with contractors, QC Inspectors must also be comfortable interacting directly with contractors and internal stakeholders.
Key Responsibilities
Quality Control Inspections
- Perform visual quality inspections on gas construction projects.
- Inspect work in progress and recently completed construction using established quality standards and inspection checklists.
- Verify that all construction activities meet company, regulatory, and safety requirements.
- Document both compliant work and identified deficiencies to support contractor performance metrics.
- Capture photographs and detailed inspection notes for all assigned projects.
- Complete quality assessments and document findings using company inspection software.
Field Oversight
- Spend approximately 90–95% of time in the field conducting inspections and audits.
- Travel to multiple job sites daily to evaluate contractor work.
- Observe construction activities and ensure adherence to approved designs, specifications, and procedures.
- Identify deviations from standards and document findings in a timely manner.
Safety & Compliance
- Conduct and document field safety audits.
- Ensure contractor crews follow established safety practices and procedures.
- Support efforts to maintain the safety and integrity of the gas distribution system.
Communication & Reporting
- Collaborate with internal teams, contractors, and project stakeholders.
- Participate in daily morning calls and weekly team meetings.
- Track and report contractor quality metrics and performance trends.
- Assist in holding contractors accountable for workmanship and compliance standards.
Required Qualifications
- Experience reading construction drawings, prints, and engineering designs.
- Strong understanding of quality inspection processes and documentation requirements.
- Experience performing and tracking QC inspections in the field.
- Ability to work independently while maintaining close coordination with project teams and contractors.
- Strong verbal communication and conflict-resolution skills.
Preferred Qualifications
- Gas construction experience on utility systems.
- Familiarity with Operator Qualification (OQ) requirements and utility construction standards.
- Experience using mobile data terminals (MDTs), inspection software, and computer-based documentation tools.
- Knowledge of utility maps and the ability to locate facilities in the field.
- Understanding of gas construction work practices, procedures, and safety requirements.

Schedule & Location
- Monday–Friday
- 8-hour workdays
- Daily morning call at 7:30 AM
- Primarily field-based role with travel to active construction sites
- Inspectors report to the office as needed for scheduling, coordination, and administrative tasks
Travel Requirements
- Daily travel between job sites is required.
- Inspectors will use their personal vehicles and will be reimbursed for mileage.
Work Environment
- Approximately 90–95% field work and site inspections.
- Remaining time spent completing documentation, reporting, and team collaboration activities.
- Work is performed independently in the field while maintaining regular communication with the broader QC team.
Top Skills
- 5+ years of experience in utility, gas, or OSP construction environments.
- Experience reading construction drawings and conducting quality control inspections.
- Ability to collaborate with internal and external stakeholders while documenting and reporting quality metrics.
- Gas construction or gas utility quality oversight experience.
- Strong knowledge of safety, compliance, and construction standards.

This is a Contract position based out of Baltimore, MD.
Pay and BenefitsThe pay range for this position is $32.00 - $45.00/hr.
