Controls Engineer

Responsibilities Perform hands‑on programming, debugging and troubleshooting of a variety of automation equipment; assist maintenance/production team members as technical support. Provide consultation, analysis, evaluation and review of automation‑related problems; contribute to development of new products or processes and systems. Monitor process performance to identify improvement opportunities, coordinate corrective actions, and ensure process standards align with plant objectives, cost, and supply targets. Assist with mechanical improvements through TPM, PM, and capital expenditure projects; aid in commissioning of new plant equipment and systems to minimize disruption. Design, cost and implement systems/projects from concept to completion, coordinating project controls and electrical activities to meet timing, quality and cost goals; supervise contractors, suppliers or technical staff as needed. Work in compliance with all safety rules and regulations to provide a safe working environment and reliable, ergonomic systems and machines; develop safeguards and improve team member safety through process improvements. Maintain and update mechanical and site drawings; design, develop, implement and modify production equipment, procedures and processes; write detailed technical specifications for projects, equipment and processes. Ensure equipment and layouts comply with current safety and environmental guidelines, local and national electrical codes. Train team members in equipment operation, standard operating procedures (SOPs), problem solving, and ME techniques (5S & TPM); conduct regular audits to maintain procedures. Adhere to NSG/Pilkington standards of business conduct, values and principles. Other duties as assigned by the manager. Qualifications Required Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering, Controls Engineering, Instrumentation, or a related field (or equivalent experience). 3+ years of experience in a manufacturing or automated systems environment. Strong hands‑on experience with PLC and HMI programming and troubleshooting. Experience with industrial automation systems (robots, servo systems, drives and controls). Proven problem‑solving and analytical skills with the ability to diagnose complex technical issues. Knowledge of electrical systems, motors and control systems. Proficiency with CAD tools such as AutoCAD or similar. Strong computer, networking and technical documentation skills. Ability to manage multiple priorities in a fast‑paced environment. Effective communication and interpersonal skills. Qualifications Desired Experience with robotics programming (e.g., ABB, Fanuc). Knowledge of motion control, vision systems and advanced automation technologies. Experience with Allen‑Bradley PLCs and industrial control platforms. Six Sigma Green Belt or other continuous improvement certification. Experience supporting a manufacturing facility with multiple automated production cells and diverse customer requirements. Regular interaction with cross‑functional teams, vendors and leadership. Track record of providing technical input on capital expenditures and equipment improvements.
