Veterinary Technician - Oncology

BluePearl Pet Hospital – Brentwood, TN BluePearl is hiring an extraordinary Oncology Veterinary Technician. A BluePearl Oncology Technician is self‑motivated, a quick thinker, and can multi‑task efficiently. Good communication skills and compassion are a must. Prefer a minimum of two or more years’ experience in a specialty veterinary hospital. The right candidate will treat and monitor patients, support the clinician with patient care, and handle client communication. Responsibilities Perform physical exams, accurately count heart rate, pulse rate, capillary refill time, mucous membranes, temperature, respiratory rate, and effort. Understand normal vital and lab parameters and alert the doctor when abnormal. Perform phlebotomy. Place a peripheral intravenous catheter in the cephalic vein. Calculate basic medical math. Set up appropriate materials for chemotherapy administration. Safely dispense and administer oral chemotherapy agents. Safely dispense, reconstitute, and administer SC/IM chemotherapy agents. Check chemotherapy agent calculations and dosages. Properly shave and wrap for an IV catheter for chemotherapy infusion. Know the management of chemotherapy extravasation and know how to respond. Admit oncology patients and obtain a thorough history, including current medications, dosages, response to treatment, side effects, intensity, and duration. Discharge oncology patients from the hospital, including basic client education on how to handle patient eliminations after chemotherapy, how to handle oral chemotherapy at home, chemotherapy and radiation side effects, and oral medication administration. Maintain a solid grasp of common veterinary medical terms and abbreviations and converse with other professionals in medical terms. Address client concerns and answer appropriately during visits, updates, or after hospitalization; quickly and competently facilitate incoming calls. Know the tumor types. Understand diagnostic work‑up protocols, including oncology specific terminology for each tumor/cancer type per each hospital’s protocol. Have a working knowledge of anesthesia/monitoring equipment and assist with patients assigned ASA I or II classifications. Remain current on the R.E.C.O.V.E.R CPR guidelines and demonstrate proficiency in a designated role as assigned by the attending clinician and/or supervisor.
