The Environmental Scientist will support environmental field investigations and site assessments for complex remediation and redevelopment projects throughout the Midwest. This role focuses on collecting and documenting soil, sediment, groundwater, surface water, and soil gas data, supporting technical analysis, and contributing to high-quality project deliverables. You will work closely with experienced environmental professionals on multi-million-dollar projects, gaining hands-on experience and broad exposure to both field and office work.
Responsibilities

• Conduct environmental field investigations and site assessments in support of remediation and redevelopment projects.
• Log soil borings and document subsurface conditions with clear, accurate descriptions.
• Collect soil, sediment, groundwater, surface water, and soil gas samples in accordance with established procedures and project plans.
• Maintain accurate and thorough field documentation, including daily field logs, boring logs, sampling logs, and site photographs.
• Assist with sample preparation, labeling, and chain-of-custody documentation to ensure proper handling and tracking of samples.
• Coordinate field activities with project teams and subcontractors to support efficient and safe project execution.
• Support environmental data review and evaluation, including basic interpretation of field and laboratory results.
• Assist with the preparation of technical reports and project deliverables, contributing field data, observations, and supporting documentation.
• Follow all health and safety procedures and consistently utilize appropriate personal protective equipment (PPE) during field operations.
• Collaborate with project teams to ensure quality, regulatory compliance, and successful completion of project objectives.
• Communicate effectively with team members regarding field conditions, sampling progress, and any issues that may impact project schedules or data quality.

Essential Skills

• Bachelor of Science degree from an accredited university in Environmental Science, Geology, Biology, Engineering, or a closely related field.
• Approximately 2+ years of experience in environmental field testing or environmental field investigations.
• Knowledge of geology and subsurface conditions relevant to soil boring and environmental site assessments.
• Experience with soil sampling, soil borings, and field testing methods used in environmental investigations.
• Understanding of environmental science principles and remediation concepts.
• Familiarity with environmental testing and environmental services, including collection of soil, sediment, groundwater, surface water, and soil gas samples.
• Completion of OSHA 40-hour HAZWOPER training or the ability to obtain it, with knowledge of OSHA Safety and Health Standards.
• Ability to maintain accurate, detailed field documentation, including logs and site photographs.
• Reliable transportation to travel to local project sites.
• Reliability and strong work ethic, with the ability to consistently follow procedures and meet project commitments.

Additional Skills & Qualifications

• Bachelor's degree in Geology, Environmental Science, or a related discipline is preferred.
• Experience supporting environmental investigation and remediation projects is beneficial.
• Flexibility and adaptability to changing field conditions and project needs.
• Solution-oriented mindset with the ability to troubleshoot issues that arise in the field.
• Willingness to take calculated risks, learn from mistakes, and continuously improve.

Work Environment
This position is primarily field-based, with Monday through Friday schedules and typical 10-hour workdays (approximately 7:00 AM to 5:00 PM). The role offers a mix of fieldwork and office support activities on environmental investigation and remediation projects, providing hands-on experience at active project sites. Work will be conducted at locations local to the Tinley Park area, and reliable transportation is required to travel to and from these sites. You will work as part of a small, close-knit team that tackles large, complex projects, creating an environment where you can learn extensively, gain exposure to multi-million-dollar initiatives, and develop your career. Job Type & Location
This is a Contract to Hire position based out of Tinley Park, IL.
Pay and Benefits
The pay range for this position is $24.00 - $27.00/hr.
Individual compensation offered for this position within this range will depend on many factors, including qualifications, skills, relevant experience, job knowledge, geographic location, internal equity, and other pertinent job-related factors.
