Summary
The Manual Machinist is responsible for setting up and operating conventional machine tools, including lathes, milling machines, grinders, drill presses, and other manual equipment to manufacture, repair, and modify precision parts and components. This position requires the ability to read blueprints, work to tight tolerances, and ensure all work meets quality and safety standards.
Specific Duties and Responsibilities:
- Set up and operate manual lathes, milling machines, surface grinders, drill presses, and other conventional machining equipment.
- Read and interpret blueprints, drawings, sketches, and work instructions.
- Calculate dimensions and tolerances using measuring instruments and mathematical formulas.
- Machine, fabricate, modify, and repair parts according to specifications.
- Select appropriate tooling, materials, and machine settings for each job.
- Perform precision measurements using calipers, micrometers, indicators, and gauges.
- Inspect finished parts to ensure they meet quality standards and specifications.
- Troubleshoot machining issues and make necessary adjustments to equipment and processes.
- Maintain accurate production and inspection records.
- Perform routine maintenance and cleaning of machinery and work areas.
- Follow all company safety procedures and wear required personal protective equipment (PPE).
- Assist with special projects and other duties as assigned.
Education and Experience:
- Experience operating Mills / lathes preferred or the aptitude to learn.
- High school diploma or GED required; technical or trade school education preferred.
- Minimum of 3 years of manual machining experience preferred.
- Strong understanding of machining principles, tooling, and materials.
- Ability to read and interpret blueprints and technical drawings.
- Proficient in using precision measuring equipment.
- Basic math skills, including geometry and trigonometry.
- Ability to work independently and prioritize tasks.
- Strong attention to detail and commitment to quality.
