Registered Veterinary Technician

The Animal Services Department is seeking a Registered Veterinary Technician (RVT) to join our team. Our mission is to create PAWsitive impact by enriching the lives of animals and people. Responsibilities Perform all duties of a licensed Veterinary Technician, including anesthesia, surgical prep and monitoring, bandage/splint application, dentistry, radiology, emergency triage, and hospitalized patient nursing care. Administer medications, immunizations, and microchips. Perform intake and exit examinations for animals entering or leaving the Center. Coordinate with management to arrange outside Veterinary Care for specialized cases and emergency transfers. Perform animal assessments, including temperature, pulse, and respiration. Collect various samples for in‑house and reference laboratory diagnostics. Maintain medical records, drug logs, and other legally required documentation for our animals. Provide daily care and enrichment to all animals at the Center. Perform humane euthanasia. Provide counseling to adopters and the public on animals with special ongoing medical conditions and fosters. Directly oversee Veterinary Assistants and animal attendants. Qualifications Education and Experience: High‑school graduation and two years of recent experience working with domestic animals as a Registered Veterinary Technician in a veterinary hospital or other animal facility. Appropriate medical training and certification to administer medications and medical procedures. Prior animal shelter experience highly desirable. License or Certificate: Valid Class C or Class 3 California Driver’s License with a satisfactory driving record. Current Registered Veterinary Technician License issued by the California State Board of Examiners in Veterinary Medicine. Knowledge, Skills and Abilities: Knowledge of various breeds of dogs, cats, and other domestic animals; principles of animal behavior, care, and husbandry; customer service practices; basic principles of record‑keeping; office organization and cleaning; ability to restrain animals for medical exams; cleaning animal kennels; safe driving principles and practices. Ability to operate a motor vehicle safely; operate computer and office equipment and software; administer injections and medications; handle animals safely and caring; learn, understand, and interpret rules and regulations governing impounding and release of animals; recognize normal and abnormal animal behavior; prepare and maintain accurate and complete records; meet and deal with the public tactfully; respond to requests and inquiries; work independently; understand oral and written instructions. Communicate clearly and concisely, both orally and in writing; establish, maintain, and foster positive relationships with staff, the public, and health care professionals. Special Requirements: Ability to work weekends, evenings, holidays, and on‑call. Requisites for selection: Pass a reference and background verification. Provide proof of a valid California driver’s license. Pass a pre‑employment medical exam. Complete a degree verification.
